DROID Turbo Lollipop Update Release Details Revealed

Rumors of the popular Motorola DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Lollipop update have been circulating since December of last year, but here we are, nearly seven months later, and it has yet to arrive. Yet yesterday, our first floor details revealed and it looks like the Turbo Android Lollipop update is coming soon.

Currently Motorola DROID Turbo is running almost stock version of Android 4.4.4 KitKat and has already seen a few updates from Verizon. We’ve been hearing for months that the DROID Turbo Lollipop update is coming soon, but yesterday Verizon changed its website and now states that Turbo is running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

Android 5.1 Lollipop, the successor to Android 4.4 KitKat, was released in November of last year, just a few weeks after Verizon released the DROID Turbo. Since then, users have been waiting for an update and numerous leaks claim it’s coming soon, but now we may indeed have some solid information to go on.

Looks like Motorola’s own David Schuster took a while Post on Google+ today and clear them all. DROID Turbo will be updated directly to Android 5.1 Lollipop and is in the final testing phase. Hopefully that means a release is coming later this month.

Last week some rumors suggested that the DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Lollipop update would arrive yesterday, June 10, but that never happened. However, a source David Ruddock Android Police’s promises It will be released this Friday, June 12. And while that’s just a rumor that can’t be trusted, not to mention the possibility of all release dates being delayed, Verizon’s own changes made us think this rumor was true.

Yesterday Verizon Wireless changed the picture DROID Turbo landing page and specs list on Verizonwireless.com to mirror DROID Turbo running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Yes, this is Android 5.0.2 and not Android 5.1 Lollipop.

There are two problems with this. For one, DROID Turbo is still stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat and didn’t get Lollipop. Second, Motorola and Verizon have promised that the device will migrate directly from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.1 Lollipop. This is to make sure it doesn’t have any of the initial Android 5.0 Lollipop bugs, not to mention Verizon can use its own VoLTE (HD Voice calling) feature.

The DROID Turbo Android Lollipop update has been delayed multiple times to offer Android 5.1 and VoLTE specifically, only to have to release another update later, rather than just releasing Lollipop.

Last month, Jose Arturo, a Verizon Engineer working on and testing software updates, sent a picture He reviewed DROID Turbo running Android 5.1 Lollipop on Google+ and answered many questions about the update. According to Arturo, a few minor bugs in Verizon’s VoLTE (HD-Voice calling) are the cause of the delay, and the software will be released after we fix a few bugs. It specifically mentioned mid-June, but we haven’t heard from Verizon yet until yesterday.

His comments suggested mid-June for launch, and here we are approaching the middle of the month and starting to see some action on the DROID Turbo front. Between the rumors linked to the above and Verizon’s own website, the DROID Turbo Lollipop update could be coming soon.

That said, the update will unfortunately be Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, not Android 5.1, but we’ll have to wait and see. Motorola has been promising Android 5.1 from the beginning, but a few glaring bugs or issues could cause this release to be delayed further. Otherwise Verizon will delay it again to deliver the absolute latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop that Google recently released.

All said and done, at least some variants of Android Lollipop seem to be making their way to DROID Turbo soon, possibly tomorrow, but in the end we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ll update when we learn more.
