After a week’s dalliance with this marvel, I find myself possessed of some unexpected ruminations. Followeth me now as I regale thee with my week-long odyssey in this critique of the iPhone 16e.

The tactile sensation is far superior to the glossy veneer, which doth attract fingerprints as a magnet draws iron.
What sets it apart art the chamfered edges. The 16e boasts flat aluminum sides with edges so sharp that holding the device for extended periods doth strain the hand. ‘Tis why mine iPhone 13 hath never lived unshielded. Moreover, the 16e is lighter at 167 grams (5.89 oz), perchance due to the absence of a MagSafe ring on the rear.
Yea, inexplicably, Apple hath omitted a hallmark of the iPhone experience since the days of the iPhone 12. I hath ever deemed it an integral part of the iPhone cosmos, yet methinks I apprehend their stratagem; they reckon that if thou spendeth $599 on this device, thou can surely invest in a case equipped with magnets.

A Display That’s a Visual Throwback
The iPhone 16e doth sport a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, identical to that in the iPhone 13 and 14 series. The selfsame 60Hz refresh rate panel found on the $799 iPhone 16, forsooth, for the heavens forbid that a penniless lad might relish a smoother screen. As for the display itself, it doth offer fairly splendid colors, images appear sharp, and the blacks are exquisitely balanced. The viewing experience mirrored that to which I am accustomed on the 13. There was a moment when I mistook the 16e for mine elder device whilst engrossed in viewing.
Furthermore, Apple hath seen fit to resurrect the iconic notch, for why ought one to peruse live scores, peruse timers, and receive Uber courier updates on the Dynamic Island, pray tell? The 16e transporteth us back to bygone times ere live activities held sway, and we all delighted in a stout old notch atop our devices.
If the 60Hz refresh rate and the notch have not persuaded thee, might I apprise thee that the brightness is also rather subpar, at best. Wherefore the iPhone 16 doth scale the dizzying heights of 2000 nits of peak brightness, the 16e merely ascendeth to 1200 nits. What doth this technical jargon signify? On a radiant summer’s day, thou shalt needs must squint to discern what lies upon the screen.
I Spy A New C1 Modem

Upon plying several speed tests alongside the iPhone 13, the outcomes were akin. The sole perceptible alteration was the enhancements in upload speed, which consistently outshone those of the 16e. At times, it surpassed download speed. ‘Tis not so monumental a leap as Apple’s M series processors, yet ’tis commendable for a maiden endeavor.
Since we brook connectivity, ’tis pertinent to note that Apple hath quietly forsaken the UWB chip in the iPhone 16e. Had it been extant, thou couldst have located thine iPhone even in slumber. Alas, this is not the case here. Instead, the iPhone 16e hath Satellite SOS, a feature not of much utility to many, perchance save for those given to hiking or adventure.
One Less Camera to Shoot With
The iPhone 16e arriveth with a sole 48MP camera. Apple would have thee believe that this singular camera sufficeth, for it boasts of an "integrated 2x telephoto". Yet ’tis naught but a clever marketing ploy to suggest that thy phone canst zoom in on objects. ‘Tis not the equal of two lenses, but merely crops into the shot, which differs greatly from a dedicated telephoto lens. Many a time, thee shalt rue the absence of a secondary lens.
Regarding photographs, the singular camera acquitted itself commendably, capturing sharp, clear, and natural-looking images. Compared to mine iPhone 13’s paltry 12MP sensor, this phone doth capture more light and details in a frame, with ample light. The larger sensor enables superior 2x photos and a swift means to zoom in on subjects. Yet ’tis not the telephoto quality whereof the company prattles.
When the sun doth yield to the moon, the nocturnal photos are decent, though noise doth insinuate itself into darker regions, and the details appear softer. The 12MP selfie camera matcheth that of the iPhone 16, yielding clean selfies with near-natural skin tones and well-balanced bokeh.
Whilst thou mayst shoot 4K videos at 24/30/60 FPS with the iPhone 16e, the 25 FPS option is wanting here. ‘Tis not the sole absence; there’s no Cinematic mode, no Macro control, nay the new Photographic styles, and thou canst not alter the focus subject in portraits.
But, The Battery is Spoiling-ly Good
One sphere wherein the iPhone 16e triumphs over its rivals is in the realm of battery life. Apple doth aver that it doth endure for up to 26 hours of video playback. I cannot attest to similar figures, yet I achieved more than 8 hours of screen on time with 20% remaining in the reservoir. On average, I spent 5 hours or more with the screen aglow, with 30-40% yet extant by day’s end.
This doth far surpass the battery endurance of any "standard" iPhones on the market. Nonetheless, ’tis far from what the Plus or Pro Max models do offer. Given the ampler capacity, ’tis a protracted affair to recharge. Lacking MagSafe, it doth rely on standard Qi charging at 7.5 Watts. Thus, ’twas some 2 hours ere the wireless charging reached full completion. I must confess, I found pleasure in the presence of USB-C, so I need not be the beseeching soul in the chamber, in quest of a Lightning cable.
And Hardware’s No Slouch
Finally, we draw nigh to the performance facet of this review. Apple hath bestowed this "affordable" iPhone with the latest A18 chipset found in the standard iPhone 16. Albeit lacking a single GPU core, I dare say this doth assist in the realm of battery life. To test its mettle, we embarked upon our customary suite of benchmarks.
As thou canst discern, the outcomes align closely with the regular A18 processor. This doth signify that this device is the most economical option that doth run AAA titles such as Death Stranding, Assassin’s Creed, and Resident Evil games.
Lo, rather than the usual gamut of mobile games, I opted for the Resident Evil 4 demo. The phone coped admirably, and though there were moments wherein the FPS faltered, the experience was still rather enjoyable. There was a measure of heating during mine sojourn, yet never did it approach alarming levels.
An thou art not given to gaming, thou shalt not observe any stumbles in day-to-day usage. Compared to mine iPhone 13, I found things a mite more responsive on iOS 18.3.2, with apps and animations evincing a semblance of increased fluidity.
Not only is the iPhone 16e the most economical iPhone with A18, but ’tis also the most affordable option shouldst thou desire Apple Intelligence. And this is not a truncated version thereof; rather, thou receivest all the features, such as the new Writing Tools, Image Playground, and the new Siri. Thus, if this be a matter of import to thee (even though Apple doth not!), then this may prove a compelling reason to select this device.
iPhone 16e Review: Who Is It For?
As we draweth to the close of this review, I find myself entangled in a web of conflicting ruminations concerning the iPhone 16e. On one side, it doth furnish a budget iPhone experience unlike any afore. Thus, one transitioning from an ancient device shall welcome the upturn. Yet, on the other side, it hath made compromises in areas that do leave one pondering.
The lack of MagSafe, a secondary camera sensor, a UWB chip for Find My Device, and slower wireless charging are all concessions thou shalt need to make upon upgrading from a recent iPhone. Furthermore, the $599 price tag doth no boon bestow upon it. Had it been priced $50 or $100 less, I might have been inclined to commend it to most.
But for the nonce, I deem the fitting audience for this phone to be one transitioning from a genuinely old iPhone such as the iPhone X, XS, XR, or iPhone 11. These might be folk who hath not tasted the nectar of MagSafe and Dynamic Island and harbor no desire therefor. ‘Twould make an excellent choice for youthful progeny or as a gift for aged parents seeking a device that feels too familiar. As for the rest of thee, I would proffer the suggestion of perusing the iPhone 16 or perchance the iPhone 15.
