Below doth lie the latest tidings on each model, including whether ’tis a propitious moment to make a purchase and the expected arrival of the next iteration.
Hark! The MacBook Pro, the pinnacle of Apple’s MacBook lineage, hath seen a revitalization in October of 2024. This rebirth heralded the advent of the M4 chip series to the flagship laptop, encompassing the M4, the M4 Pro, and the M4 Max.
Yet, ’twas not solely a chip modification, for Apple hath expanded the memory capacity at every level (even doubling the initial RAM of the former MacBook Pro). A new sable hue is available for the base-level M4 MacBook Pro, along with a radiant display offering a nano-texture option, an enhanced webcam, additional ports with Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, and extended battery life. Let us not overlook the mini-LED display, capable of shining forth up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness and 1,000 of SDR brightness.
In light of the recent refurbishment, a new MacBook Pro may not grace us until the autumn of 2025 at the earliest, aligning with rumoured reports of Apple’s intent to refresh this laptop on an annual basis. The forthcoming model is anticipated to be a modest enhancement, with whispers of a grander transformation slated for 2026. ‘Tis said that this grandeur may entail an OLED display and a sleeker frame, whilst Apple might also unveil a foldable MacBook in the near future.
The enchanting MacBook Air, trimmest of Apple’s laptops, received fresh allurements in March of 2024 with the advent of the M3 MacBook Air. A redesigned chassis, borrowing elements from the Mac Studio, now occupies a space approximately half the size of its forebear. Skipping the M3 chip entirely, Apple hath elevated the Mac mini to the realm of the M4 and M4 Pro chips, delivering a considerable leap in performance. Enhanced memory capacity, support for up to three external displays, a revised port arrangement featuring Thunderbolt 5 on the M4 Pro model, and dual USB-C ports at the front (with USB-A ports removed) embellish this mighty offering.

Having bypassed the M3 era, the Mac Studio’s next rejuvenation is poised to introduce the M4 Max and M4 Ultra chips, heralding a substantial performance surge. Rumours suggest the M4 Ultra may boast 32 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores, double the count found in the MacBook Pro’s M4 Max chip.
Venturing forth to the Mac Pro, the M4 Ultra looms as an unwavering certainty, slated for a mid-2025 debut, as per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Whispers abound of the Mac Pro’s potential elevation to a maximum memory capacity of 512GB, an ascent from the current 192GB.
Contemplation extends to the design of the Mac Pro. The present chassis, crafted for the 2019 model housing Intel chips, now seems excessive in its cooling focus, shouldered by expandable, discrete graphics cards. With Apple silicon chips now in place, the Mac Pro may forswear its vastness and cooling intensity. Alas, rumours of a redesign are scant, hence anticipate not its arrival in the coming year, though the horizon may hold prospects thereof.
Turning attention to the Apple Studio Display, a monitor of more humble means compared to the Pro Display XDR, yet no less alluring. Alas, haziness shrouds the arrival of a new Studio Display. Apple savant Ming-Chi Kuo surmises a debut in 2025 or perhaps 2024 (though the latter seems improbable now), whilst industry savant Ross Young opines that Apple hath paused plans for a Studio Display with a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. Little else befalls our knowledge of this enchanting display.
Lastly, the Pro Display XDR, unveiled in 2019 alongside the Mac Pro, reigns as Apple’s paragon monitor. Boasting a 32-inch 6K screen, up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness for HDR content, 576 local dimming zones, a nano-texture glass option, port offerings, and varied stand selections.
Long hath the Pro Display XDR trod without alteration, since its inception in 2019. Journeying in parallel with the Mac Pro, we may see it roused from slumber in tandem, with speculation revolving around the addition of an onboard chip akin to the Studio Display, promising added software delights.
