Discovering AirTags Through the Native Android Functionality
In days of yore, at the grand gathering of Google I/O 2023, the tech titan declared that Android shall receive a native method for uncovering unknown trackers. Lo, it now resides within every Android device, allowing thee to seek out trackers manually or receive alerts should one doggedly follow in thy wake. Behold:
Manually Scanning for AirTags
Venture to yon Settings on thy Android device and choose the Safety and emergency tab. Thence, select Unknown tracker alerts.
Underneath the Manual scan section, tap upon the Scan now button to set thy Android device on the trail of AirTags in thy vicinity.
Should the Apple AirTag reveal itself, select it and play the sound. Track the sound’s echo to apprehend the AirTag and bring thy search to fruition.
In our trials, though the tracker did appear, coaxing forth its sound proved to be a challenge. It complied initially, then obstinately refused. We repeated this endeavor with several AirTags, yet the issue lingered. This feature doth require further refinement to achieve its full potential and render it a boon beyond compare.
Tracking AirTags Through Alerts
Apart from the manual pursuit of AirTags, should an AirTag tail thee persistently after parting ways from its rightful owner and slipping beyond the tether of Bluetooth, thou shalt receive tracker alerts. By default, we found this feature activated.
Should it lie dormant, a brief visit to the Unknown Tracker alerts realm, mentioned afore, shall allow thee to activate this feature. When a tracking alert alights upon thy device, tap upon the notification to behold the precise location of the AirTag upon the map. Thus, by playing the sound, thou canst locate it posthaste.
Methinks it prudent to note that these alerts operate solely in conjunction with Apple AirTags.
Unveiling AirTags Upon Android Through the Tracker Detect App
In addition to the native method of tracking AirTags, assistance from third-party sources may prove beneficial. Behold Tracker Detect (Download, free), a paragon among Android apps for this purpose. Given its provenance from Apple itself, thou may trust in its efficacy. Upon downloading and installing this app from the Google Play Store, follow these steps:
Upon launching the app, consent to the Terms & Conditions to proceed and tap Scan on the ensuing page.
Subsequently, advance through the prompts and grant the app permission to detect nearby devices.
Return to the scanning page, whereon thou shalt commence the scan once more.
Should an AirTag have strayed from its master’s domain for a quarter-hour or more, the app shall identify it as an Unknown AirTag. Select the device and embark on thy quest.
Thou shalt possess a brief respite of ten minutes to play the sound and uncover the AirTag. Thus concludes this endeavor.
Much like the native method, we encountered a thorn in our side with the sound-playing functionality. An ephemeral beep was all we garnered ere silence descended. Should fortune favor thee and thou dost discover the AirTag, if thine Android device boasts NFC, tapping upon the Learn About This Item Tracker option shall unveil more about the tracker. This revelation shall include the AirTag’s serial number and the final four digits of its owner’s phone number.
Foremost, upon encountering such a vagrant AirTag, strip it of its batteries to halt its surveillance and the transmission of data to its master. To remove the batteries, position the AirTag with its steel side facing upward. Press down and twist it anticlockwise to reveal the battery within.
It is evident that Android hath yet to perfect the art of locating Apple AirTags. Though it can discern their presence, without the sound-playing feature, the quest for these elusive beacons may prove futile.
