WolfEye Studios, a band of indie artisans consisting of former virtuosos from Arkane Studios, has unveiled a tantalizing glimpse of their forthcoming opus: an action RPG bedecked in a retro sci-fi allure that promises to amalgamate the visual splendor and gameplay mechanics of Fallout and Dishonored.
In a missive scribed by studio president and co-founder Raphael Colantonio, a luminary who played a pivotal role in the genesis of Arkane, the game is posited to captivate aficionados of Dishonored and Prey. A cursory glance at the visuals confirms this assertion, as the automatons and contraptions showcased exude a dilapidated and unwieldy charm, with eerie humanoid traits that harken back to Fallout’s Atomic Age aesthetic.
“Enthusiasts of my past endeavors, such as Dishonored and Prey, will find themselves in familiar environs, as will devotees of RPGs at large,” Colantonio declared in a proclamation issued to the press.
Delving deeper into the nebulous tapestry of the unnamed game’s design, Colantonio expounded on its ethos in dialogues with sundry publications alongside WolfEye’s fellow co-founder, Julien Roby. Conversing with Eurogamer, Colantonio elucidated, “If one were to delineate a spectrum spanning Fallout and Dishonored, I venture to posit that Prey occupies an intermediary position due to its heightened RPG elements, whereas our latest endeavor veers closer to the realm of Fallout in terms of its RPG complexity.”
While Colantonio and Roby remained reticent regarding specific intricacies, a few salient details have emerged. The nascent game will unfurl as a first-person action RPG set against the backdrop of an alternate 1900s America, nestled within the annals of the Old West. Beyond these confines, it is described as an immersive sim, facilitating a myriad of approaches to navigating challenges, a genre where Arkane has etched its name through titles like the Dishonored series and Prey.
As per reports, the game has transitioned from its pre-production phase to full-fledged development, with the quest for a publisher underway. While further revelations are slated for the forthcoming year, interested players have the opportunity to enlist for the possibility of engaging in a private alpha test via the studio’s official website, scheduled for 2025.
In the interim, the digital landscape may burgeon with clues and revelations across social platforms. In a nod to the game’s genesis, the studio obliquely hinted at its existence during the Game Developers Conference in March, unveiling naught but an image of a whiteboard adorned with the phrases “Retro Sci-Fi” and “First Person.” Prospects of whimsical teasers unfurling in the days ahead seem distinctly plausible.
Colantonio, an architect of Arkane Studios for nearly two decades, sculpted the creative vision for an array of seminal titles, including the Dishonored series and Prey. Roby, who lent his talents to Arkane for 11 years prior, contributed to projects like Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Mafia 3 at 2K. The saga of WolfEye commenced with their inaugural release, the isometric third-person marvel Weird West in 2022, distinguished by its arresting artistry and immersive sim nuances.
Comprising a cohort of former Arkane luminaries, WolfEye stands at the vanguard of innovation following the closure of Arkane Austin by Microsoft earlier this year. While their forthcoming creation may not bear the insignia of a new “Arkane” immersive sim, its essence resonates harmoniously with the legacy of the studio, serving as a solace for those who mourned the demise of Arkane post the ill-fated Redfall debacle.
