Once upon a time, a beacon of hope shone brightly in the realm of gaming, as not one, but three spiritual successors to the legendary Disco Elysium were unveiled on a fateful Friday. A triumvirate of studios emerged, each striving to capture the magic of one of the greatest games ever created.
First to step into the spotlight was Dark Math Games, a group described as a “breakaway” from the original team. Their offering, XXX Nightshift, bears a striking resemblance to Disco Elysium in its early stages, promising a “unique companion dynamic,” a deep RPG system, and a tale of mystery unfolding at a ski resort in futuristic Antarctica.
Led by the seasoned Timo Albert, a former artisan from ZA/UM, Dark Math Games boasts a team of 20 individuals, though the presence of other Disco Elysium alumni remains shrouded in ambiguity. Albert himself, now the art director at Dark Math, declared in a press release, “We shall bring forth innovation in RPG mechanics, injecting a breath of fresh air into the genre. Expect fewer words, more bullets, and above all, a plethora of enjoyment.”
On the heels of Dark Math Games comes Longdue, a band of intrepid developers determined to carry on Disco Elysium’s legacy with a new artistic venture. Their unnamed project is said to feature a groundbreaking “psychogeographic RPG” mechanic, where the tendrils of choice weave a tapestry of ever-evolving consequences.
Notably, former luminaries Robert Kurvitz and Aleksander Rostov have joined the ranks of Longdue, having parted ways with ZA/UM amidst whispers of misconduct. As the narrative of Longdue unfolds, the shadow of past discord lingers, hinting at untold tales of intrigue and upheaval.
Lastly, there is Summer Eternal, an ensemble unafraid to reveal its ties to the esteemed writers and artists of Disco Elysium. Writers Argo Tuulik, Olga Moskvina, Dora Klindžić, alongside other distinguished creatives, have pledged to embark on a journey of collaborative creation and artistic integrity, striving to uphold the torch lit by Disco Elysium.
In the backdrop of these unfolding dramas lies a tale of success and strife, as Disco Elysium soared to new heights, only to be ensnared in the web of internal discord. Amazon’s rumored involvement in a potential adaptation serves as a bittersweet reminder of the game’s glory days, now overshadowed by legal battles and halted sequels.
With an air of mystery surrounding their project, Summer Eternal stands as a bastion of Disco Elysium’s political ethos, a beacon amidst the tumult of generative AI and the relentless march of capitalism. Their manifesto speaks of a divine calling to create games, a solemn duty embraced by those who seek to redefine the landscape of interactive storytelling.
