Unreleased ‘Turma da Mônica’ comic will feature a character with dwarfism

It seems that this time we will have a different face in the Limoeiro neighborhood in the new Turma da Mônica comic. We are talking about Bernardoa character who has dwarfism. However, you will be surprised to discover that the story was inspired by a real case that occurred in Rio Grande do Sul, more specifically in the city of Caxias do Sul.

The young man in question has achondroplasia, one of the most common types of this disability. It is a genetic disease that is responsible for interfering with the natural growth of bones, which ends up resulting in the short stature of individuals who have it.

The new comic book is called “Our Friend with Dwarfism” and the comic brings to light Bernardo’s first day of school at the Limoeiro School. At this same school, Mônica, Cebolinha, Magali, Cascão and the other characters that belong to this group study.

When Monica’s Gang meets the boy, they start asking about his height. It is at this moment that they begin to learn the story of Bernardo, a boy who is ready to open his heart and share the difficulties he faces due to having dwarfism.

Flávia Berti Hoffmann, mother of the boy whose story was used as the basis for the comic strip, spoke about the new work. Check out what Flávia said below:

“We know it’s important to talk about these issues with children, so they grow up understanding and respecting differences, and ‘Turma da Mônica’ is very well-received by this audience, so this character will certainly play an extremely important role in the cause of dwarfism. Seeing this book finished is a dream come true!”

According to Mauricio de Sousa, the process of creating the new character was something totally interesting and enjoyable. According to the artist:

“Inclusion and representation are part of the day-to-day life of ‘Turma da Mônica’ and it is great to know that we are increasingly able to portray so many children around the world. We are certain that this story and this character will contribute to improving the lives of people with dwarfism.”

The new comic will be published by Culturama and is supported by the biopharmaceutical company BioMarin. The timing for the book’s release was chosen based on the date that marks the National Day for Combating Prejudice Against People with Dwarfism, October 25. The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Livraria Cultura. The bookstore is located at Avenida Paulista, 2,073, in the city of São Paulo.
