Recently, DC Comics decided to clarify this event for fans, revealing a deep connection between Green Arrow and the events that unfolded at that time. But first we must know what the “Great Disaster” was.
The great disaster
In “Kamandi #1”, published in 1972, Jack Kirby and Mike Royer presented a post-apocalyptic world called “The Great Disaster”. The story takes place in the distant future, in which a global catastrophe has occurred and devastated human civilization.
In this chaotic world, humans are nearly extinct and the Earth is now dominated by anthropomorphic animals and other mutated creatures. Kamandi, the protagonist of the story, is the last known human boy and he must face various dangers and challenges to survive in this hostile environment.
“The Great Disaster” is not specifically detailed in the first issue, but is referenced as a catastrophic event that led to the downfall of human society and the emergence of a new world order led by intelligent animals.
Is Green Arrow involved?
In a stunning reveal, we learn that Green Arrow and his family of superheroes played a pivotal role in triggering the “Great Disaster.” This event, which occurred in the distant past, resulted in the devastating loss of billions of lives and left the world in ruins.
However, it was only recently that DC Comics delved deeper into this narrative, revealing Green Arrow’s direct connection to this event of epic proportions, specifically in the magazine “Green Arrow #3”, by Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaake, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Troy Peteri below.
The “Great Disaster” had its roots in a series of interconnected circumstances, a domino effect that culminated in a global catastrophe. And surprisingly, it turns out that the actions of Green Arrow’s family contributed to the progression of this disaster.
Although these heroes’ intentions were noble, the consequences of their choices proved disastrous for humanity.
How do we know this?
It was through a special edition published that we witnessed a highly relevant event in the history of Green Arrow. In this narrative, Oliver Queen, along with Lian Harper and Connor Hawke, find themselves mysteriously trapped in the 31st century, in a futuristic world full of wonders and dangers.
In this context, they join the renowned team of superheroes known as the Legion of Super-Heroes, in order to unravel the enigmas behind a series of inexplicable teleportations that have been occurring.
As the plot unfolds, the characters are faced with an intriguing challenge: unraveling the origins and reasons behind these unpredictable teleportations. Lian Harper, in particular, reveals that she has been a victim of these events since her supposed death in the dramatic events of “Justice League: Cry for Justice.”
She suspects that these teleportations are somehow linked to Amanda Waller, an enigmatic figure, and a shadowy individual who appeared shortly after her death. But the video speeches that Green Arrow presents as a message from his older self present an intriguing twist. Follow:
“Hey Ollie, if you’re hearing this it’s because they finally caught us. We screwed up. In truth. There’s this thing called The Great Disaster. Billions of people die. And we caused it. And when I say ‘we’, I don’t mean you and me. I mean all of us. Our family.”
“So I made a deal with someone who could help me go back in time and take some…preventative measures. Our family can never be together. I did it so we would have a chance to be happy on our own. Just not together. Especially me. There’s a reason I was marooned on that island all those years ago. And I can never get out of there.”
