The Video Game History Foundation, a non-profit entity dedicated to preserving the history of video games, revealed in its latest documentary never-before-seen phases of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘, a classic from 1992.
Originally released in 1992 for the mega drivethe game marked the debut of Sonic’s inseparable companion: Tails.
Despite its hectic development, the game received both financial and critical praise, being considered by many to be one of the best electronic games of all time due to its level design, soundtrack and other captivating elements.
Today, we can relive that nostalgia on PlayStation, Xbox consoles and mobile devices.

Documentary shows never-before-seen stages of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’
In the documentary, images of stages that never made it into the final version of the game are revealed, such as the mysterious Cyber City Zone and the intriguing Genocide City Zone.
At the time of development, it was common to speed up the process to meet release deadlines, resulting in precious content that never saw the light of day.
The documentary takes us on a journey through tapes VHS and original files, courtesy of members of the development teams at the time.
In addition to narrating the game’s story and initial plans, the video features new material from Tom Payne, game designer and scenery artist.

We can’t forget the treasures found on the VHS tape of Brenda Ross, another talented member of the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ team.
Ross gifted us with forest, desert and winter themed stages, while Payne had his visionary Cyber City Zone scrapped.
The documentary also has exclusive drafts of Yasushi Yamaguchi and Hirokazu Yasuhara, two giants in the creation of the ‘Sonic’ saga.
Their contributions and insights offer a unique perspective on the creative process behind this iconic franchise of games.
