As you probably know, Netflix increased its prices in France once again on Friday, October 20, 2023. This price increase is part of a long process that the streaming platform started in 2019. The bill, which was €11.99 and €15.99 for Standard and Premium subscriptions that year, now rises to €13.49 and €19.99 per month respectively.
The question now for the user who is increasingly uncomfortable paying more is whether these increases are truly justified. JustWatch, a search engine that lists the catalogs of major streaming platforms, has published a new study on the subject: Netflix vs competitors, does its higher price justify?
Netflix: prices increased, catalog grew
A valid question, because Netflix actually offers the most expensive streaming offer on the market (i.e. the Premium package at €19.99 per month). As seen in the chart published by JustWatch, Netflix’s catalog continued to grow between 2019 and 2023. Today it has grown from 4,000 titles (films and TV series combined) to almost 8,000.
The opposite is not true among Netflix’s main competitors such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, OCS and even Canal+ SVOD. Note the absence of Apple TV+ in this study, which is (perhaps) justified by its still very limited catalog (which does not prevent it from being one of the best on the market at the moment).
If the Netflix library has therefore shown steady, linear growth, the result is sawtooth on Prime Video, for example. A catalog whose quantity varies greatly, especially between 2020 and 2022. The Disney+ catalog, on the other hand, is showing dizzying growth, growing from less than 800 titles to 2,000 between 2020 and 2023. The company with a big ear to fill out its catalog if it wants to stay competitive.
Importantly, the JustWatch table also mentions: IMDb average of Netflix, Prime Video, Canal+ and OCS catalogs. It’s an opportunity to see how Netflix manages to deliver visibly quantity and quality, with a score of 7.1/10 for its entire library. The platform shares this 3rd place in the ranking with Amazon Prime Video. Disney+ is on the second step of the podium, while OCS is in the 1st place. But there is nothing surprising when we know that OCS is the only broadcaster of HBO series on French territory until 2022.
