Tapu Koko is, of course, by far the most recognizable of the fourth Tapus of Gen 7 games, and is generally considered one of the more powerful as its typing and move set can deal massive damage to a number of Pokemon in the game.

Before we get too deep into how to beat Tapu Koko and the best counters for it, let’s talk about what many Pokemon Go players are looking for.

Can You Catch Shiny Deed Koko in Pokemon Go?

The short answer is yes.

With the latest Crackling Voltage event, Tapu Koko can now appear in Glossy in Five-Star Raids.

Shiny Tapu Koko is one of the coolest glows in all of Pokemon, replacing its yellow color with a worse looking black. As with other Shiny Pokemon caught in Raids in Pokemon Go, trainers won’t know they’ve encountered a Shiny until they defeat the Raid Pokemon and enter the capture screen.

The Crackling Voltage event will give trainers a chance to encounter it in Raids for the duration of the event, but will also have a chance to catch Shiny forever when Tapu Koko returns to Raids in the future.

Tapu Koko Pokemon Go Counters

Tapu Koko is an Electric and Fairy type, which only makes her weak against Ground and Poison type moves.

Since the introduction of Tapu Koko to Pokemon Go, more Megas have been introduced to help trainers defeat this Legendary with ease.

Mega Steelix was the only Earth-type Mega Pokemon, but has now been surpassed by Mega Swampert.

The 3rd Generation Water-Type Starter Pokemon will deal massive damage to Tapu Koko with Ground moves while supporting other Pokemon using Ground attacks. Of course, Mega Steelix can also be used to give a boost, but the move set isn’t the best, so if you can use Mega Swampert, this is the Pokemon we recommend.

Pair Mega Swampert with other powerful Earth-types like Garchomp, Mamoswine, Rhyperior, and Landorus.

Trainers can use Mega Gengar or Mega Beedrill if you want to bring in powerful Poison types.

Mega Beedrill will take advantage of Tapu Koko’s Poison weakness and have access to multiple moves to weaken Legendary. The Poison Jab and Sludge Bomb are great moves to hit Tapu Koko hard, but having access to Drill Run gives Beedrill another attacking option. However, keep in mind that the Mega Beedrill is a glass ball and probably won’t last very long in combat.

While Mega Gengar doesn’t have the Quick Attack to take advantage of his Poison spell, his boost with the Sludge Bomb is a decent option.

Pokemon like Nihelego and Nidoking also benefit from Poison typings.

Tapu Koko Moveset

Tapu Koko’s Quick Attacks consist of an Electric-type Volt Switch and a Normal-type Quick Attack. Ground types will be great against Tapu Koko’s Volt Switch, but Steel and Rock types like Rhyperior, Steelix, and Excadrill will counter both attacks.

As for Tapu Koko’s Charged Attacks, they are Thunderbolt and Thunder Legendary’s main STAB attacks. Again, Pokemon like Rhyperior, Steelix, Excadrill, and Roserade will resist them. The Rock and Steel types will also resist Tapu Koko’s Brave Bird Charged Attack. His flying spell hits Mega Beedrill and Roserade super effectively.

Dazzling Gleam is Tapu Koko’s only Fairy-type move and deals neutral damage to Pokemon like Rhyperior and Groudon. It will also deal super-effective damage against other Ground types like Garchomp and Krookodile, so find out what moves Legendary has. Steel and Poison strains such as Steelix, Excadrill, Mega Beedrill and Roserade are all resistant to Dazzling Gleam.

Steelix and Excadrill are two Pokemon that really resist all of Tapu Koko’s attacks, so bringing them into battle can be useful.

Oddly enough, Pokemon Go doesn’t have immune variants. Ground types aren’t usually damaged by Electric moves, but in Pokemon Go they just make him resist so Mega Swampert isn’t effectively hit by these attacks anyway. Unfortunately, the Water typing causes Tapu Koko’s Electric attacks to become neutral.

Despite this, Mega Swampert is currently the best Ground-type Mega in the game. The good outweighs the bad, so go with Starter if you want.
