Need some Darktide tips to become the best Agent you can be? Warhammer 40k Darktide combat is pretty tough, and many gameplay details are easily overlooked. Naturally, if you want to get better at Darktide, it’s important to be aware of things like the Corruption system, misleading friendly fire sound lines, and enemy voices.
From difficulty level to weapon stats, this list of Darktide tips will guide you through the City of Tertium. As for other things you might need, we also cover Darktide error codes and the best Darktide settings to keep things running smoothly.
1. Stick to the team for survival
This may be a general rule for all co-op games, but in Darktide’s case it’s doubly important: stay with your teammates. The main reason is the Stamina mechanic, which is your character’s damage reduction shield (blue bar). In addition to killing enemies, Stamina is restored when you are near an ally. Note that stamina doesn’t stop all damage, but it’s much easier to survive a mission if you manage to keep up.
2. Communicate about items and targets
Another Darktide tip with the team: communicate about items and quests. Sure, team communication is pretty important in any co-op game, but there are a few specific things you should always discuss when running in Tertium city:
- If you don’t receive an item, notify your teammates by pinging the location for them.
- Likewise, if you need ammo, share this information with the team.
- Discuss the goals. Think you need to explore a different area? Or would you rather give up on a secondary goal? Discuss this with the team!
- Be especially careful with the secondary target containing the Grimoires, as collecting them will cause the entire team to gain Corruption. Before getting one, ask your teammates if they’re okay with it.
3. Watch out for the corruption piling up, because too much will get you caught
If you get knocked down but your teammates revive you, it won’t hurt, right? Unfortunately, Darktide’s Corruption mechanics say differently. Each time you get knocked out, your HP bar will get a little more purple, thus reducing your max health. A completely corrupted HP bar is instantly captured, preventing you from playing until the team saves you. Note that corruption is also caused by certain enemy attacks or getting a Grimoire.
Since corruption cannot be healed with first aid kits, the only way to get rid of it is to regenerate HP in the Medicae Station (see image). Naturally, if you find one, share the location with the team.
4. Don’t be afraid of friendly fire – nothing despite vocal lines
Why? Why? Because there is none. Many new players are not aware of this because characters will react to being shot. It’s nothing more than voice lines though, so you don’t actually hurt your allies. And that’s a good thing because it means you can safely use flamethrowers and grenades.
But beware that allies can block projectiles even without friendly fire. A large Ogryn standing in the sight of a Veteran is still not ideal.
5. Learn the Darktide class system
Understanding your teammates’ abilities is just as important as learning your own Darktide class. Here is a brief overview of the classes:
- Senior Sniper: He specializes in ranged combat, the strongest when headshots.
- Psyker Psychokinetics: A mage-like ranged damage dealer that is great against bosses.
- Zealot Preacher: A melee expert with high damage potential relies on Stamina.
- Ogryn Head Breaker: Another frontline fighter who is good at surprising swarms and inflicting heavy melee damage.
It is recommended that you try them all, as playing them is the best way to get used to each class. You cannot change class with an existing character, but you can use up to five Operative (character) slots. Yes, the introduction and training can be skipped.
6. Use Psykhanium
After spawning in the main hub, turn right to find the Psykhanium practice area. Besides the basic tutorials, you should use the Meat Grinder training ground to test different weapons and practice your skills on target dummies. Although dummies do not engage in combat, you can still use them to find weak spots or test their armor strength. The meat grinder is unlocked at level 2 (in other words, after completing a quest).
7. Understand Darktide weapon stats
Darktide weapons come with a main ‘rating’, which is essentially a set of points divided over a set of stats. A higher rating doesn’t necessarily mean the weapon has the best stats for your character, so make sure you understand their meaning. Here’s an overview of common Darktide weapon stats:
- Damage: Increases damage.
- Reload speed: increased reload speed.
- Ammunition: extra magazine size.
- Mobility: sprint speed, dodge limit and dodge distance.
- stability: affects the recoil, spread and swing of projectiles.
- Fineness: increases attack speed and adds extra critical strike and weak point damage.
- critical Bonus: Increases critical strike damage.
- penetration: Additional attack power against Flak and Carapace armor.
- split damage: damage to secondary targets hit by the same hit.
- stopping Strength: increases stagger and impact on hit.
- radius: affects the range of area of effect weapons.
- guarantee: increases stagger, impact, and downforce.
- Defenses: affects the weapon’s block ability.
- Firstly aim: How much damage was done to the first target hit.

8. Choose the right difficulty
Before starting a new Darktide mission in the mission terminal, pay attention to the difficulty level. Each task displays a skull icon with one to five stripes, with one stripe being the easiest and five being the most difficult.
So when will you be ready to try a higher level? While it’s different for every player, here’s a general guideline:
- First difficulty level: new characters
- Difficulty level two: level 5+
- Difficulty level three: level 15+
- Fourth difficulty level: level 25+
- Fifth difficulty level: level 30
9. Recognize enemy voices
Darktide enemy types come with their own unique sounds. You can tell what’s coming just by listening, as they’ll make that sound before it reaches your team. While this is something learned through experience, try to listen to these early game enemy voices:
- A deep growl sounds like more than one voice: a Horde
- Howling sound: Pox Hound
- Singular deep wheezing: Mutant
- Bomb-like clicking sound: Pox Burster
- An absolutely awful growl: It’s a Boss, like a Nurgle Beast
10. Don’t be too eager to jump
Most Darktide quests contain points of no return. Once you jump off a ledge (yes, mostly from falling), you can’t go back to the previous area. Be careful not to accidentally fall, but don’t be too eager to do it on purpose. First of all, you have to make sure you don’t miss any loot. Second, you need to check if your teammates are ready. If your partner is attacked after you move on, there is nothing that can be done about it.
And that ends our list of Warhammer 40k Darktide tips. Good luck Operative!
