iOS 6: How to Take Photos While Capturing Videos on iPhone 5

Thanks to a new feature in iOS 6, it is possible to take photos while shooting video on the iPhone 5. This means users don’t have to choose between shooting a video or catching the perfect photo opportunity.

When shooting video on iPhone 5, users can tap the camera button to take a photo while the video is in progress.

The feature is only available on iPhone 5. Although the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3GS run iOS 6, there is no way to take photos while shooting video on these older devices. This isn’t a reason alone to buy the iPhone 5 over the iPhone 4S, but it’s another example of how Apple keeps the best features for the latest iPhone.

iPhone 5 allows users to take photos while shooting video.

Take Photos While Capturing Video on iPhone 5

The video below shows taking a photo while in video mode on the iPhone 5. It’s easy to overlook the little camera icon in the top right, but that’s it for taking pictures while shooting video.

To take a photo, tap the small camera icon in the top right, you can take a photo in a row without stopping the video.

Below are also a series of sample photos taken while filming the video. The photos taken are at a lower resolution than the iPhone 5 normally takes photos because it matches the video resolution. This means that the photos are 1920 x 1080; it is still suitable for online sharing and home printing.

This new feature helps Apple compete with the Samsung Galaxy S III, which also allows users to take photos while capturing video. This feature is the focus of several Samsung ads, but not mentioned by Apple in the iPhone ads.
