How to get Valheim chickens and hatching eggs

Do you want to raise Valheim chickens? Feeding chickens is not very difficult, but you need to know how to get the first eggs. Once you understand that, all you need is an enclosure and a nice, warm place to incubate your chicken eggs.

How to get Valheim chickens

If you want chicken, you have to find some eggs first. They are sold by the dwarf merchant Haldor living in the Black Forest. An egg costs 1500 Gold, but be sure to bring at least 3000 Gold as you need two chickens to start breeding.

There is only one thing to be aware of; Haldor will only sell chicken eggs after you defeat Yagluth. Eggs will not appear in your inventory if you haven’t already. Although chickens do not spawn in the Mistlands, this makes them essentially a Mist Land creature in terms of progression.

How to open eggs in Valheim?

Now that you have your eggs, it’s time to hatch them. As you’ll notice, putting the egg on the ground won’t do any good because it’s too cold. To change that, you need two things: a nearby fire and a roof. While it’s perfectly okay to build a beautiful brood chamber, placing the egg under a single roof next to a base campfire will suffice (see photo).

Hover over an egg to check if it’s really ready to crack. The text should tell you the egg is ‘hot’. It will take roughly one in-game day for the first chicken to spawn. A very important detail: Eggs do not crack when stacked! So instead of throwing two stacks of eggs (which look like one egg) on ​​the ground, hold down CTRL and left-click to select a single egg.

Also, watch out for newborn chickens going crazy, so build a fence around the egg before it hatches. Unlike real world eggs, and luckily Valheim eggs don’t break, so you can safely pick them up and throw them back on the ground if needed.

How to raise chickens in Valheim?

Then wait until your chickens are fully grown. After spending about two or three days in the game, they automatically turn into adults called chickens. Don’t worry about this name; they can still breed, even if it means all your chickens are female.

All that is required for chicken breeding is at least two adult chickens and plenty of food. New chickens will spawn as eggs again and will not hatch unless campfire and roof conditions are met. In other words, if you just want to raise eggs, eliminate the heat.
