For several years, Apple has been trying to do as much as possible without external suppliers for the components of its devices. The most striking example is, of course, the in-house M1 and M2 processors that have been powering their Macs and iPads since 2020. It is a process that has met with success as well as failure. Also in 2020, Bloomberg said that the Cupertino company is developing its own modem for its iPhones.
This part, which is usually managed by Qualcomm, would initially be replaced by 5G modems from 2023, according to some analyst. Suffice it to say that Qualcomm isn’t particularly excited about losing one of its biggest customers. So it was definitely a big surprise when the manufacturer learned that it will finally hold its market for next year.
iPhones will finally keep Qualcomm modems in 2023
Announcing the news once again, Bloomberg: Qualcomm will continue to supply 5G modems to Apple for 5G. “the great majority” iPhones in 2023, as the firm announced while releasing its financial results. Therefore, the manufacturer will not suffer the same fate as Intel during the democratization of Apple M1 fingers for now.
Obviously, the Cupertino company is therefore facing some difficulties in developing its own modem technology. It should be said that Qualcomm has already perfected its solution, with speeds increased by 38% on the iPhone 14 Pro. By comparison, Intel’s modems, which Apple bought to design its own version, have always been slower than their competitors.
However, this does not mean that the Apple brand has given up on the project. Qualcomm still believes its market is doomed and is even poised to see it disappear by 2025.
