The new PS5 is here! Almost. There is no question about the Slim model, which has been on the agenda with many rumors recently. cpu change. Let’s summarize again. In the summer of 2021, a new PS5 is landing in a few countries such as Japan, the United States, and Australia. At first glance, nothing has changed except one detail: its weight. Indeed, this new console is 400 grams lighter.
Therefore, it would have to wait a few months to understand how Sony was able to make this change. We already knew that the manufacturer had it. replaced the heat sink a smaller model and therefore lighter, but not how this is possible without affecting the performance of the console. Logically, the main change was of course at the processor level.
PS5 has a new processor, but it doesn’t change (almost) anything
Thus, this brand new PS5 integrates a processor AMD Oberon Plus based on the TSMC 6N manufacturing process, compared to the 7N for the previous model. However, this new processor does not lead to any increase in performance. In this respect, the equipped PS5 is exactly the same as its predecessors. The real difference therefore lies elsewhere, namely in the size of the chip.
In the effect, 6N SoC increases transistor density by 18.8%, therefore with equal power, it makes it possible to reduce the size of the processor, but also facilitates the cooling process. That brings us back to the first information that reached us on this new PS5, explaining how Sony has managed to reduce the weight of its console.
In other words, the difference for gamers is relatively small… but not for Sony. This new process is reduce production costs by 12% and indeed, it increases their production capacity (depending on the availability of components). A sensitivity that won’t fail to frighten some people a few weeks after the surprise price hike of the PS5.
