Everything we know about Warzone 2 proximity chat

Warzone 2 proximity chat is one of the many new features that will be active in both regular battle royale and the new DMZ mode, allowing all players to chat successfully and with varying volume based on their in-game distance. This means your allies should stay nearby for tactical chat, but you can also hear your enemies talking and they can hear you. However, not much is known about this potentially game-changing feature, so here’s everything we know so far about the proximity chat in Warzone 2.

What is proximity chat?

Proximity chat was announced as a new feature during the last Call of Duty Next event, but there was little mention of it. For anyone who doesn’t know, proximity chat is an in-game voice chat system that allows all players to communicate using a microphone, but only when their in-game characters are close to each other. This means that hearing your team and communicating effectively depends on being close to each other. However, your enemies can also eavesdrop on your communications and use them against you.

The feature has been confirmed for Warzone 2 and will appear in both the revamped battle royale mode and the new DMZ mode – a PvPvE sandbox and landing mode similar to Escape From Tarkov. Based on current information, it appears that proximity chat will not be a feature in the regular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer and is not included in the current Modern Warfare 2 beta.

Proximity chat can both be gripping for the layer of realism it provides, encouraging more thoughtful and tactical gameplay, and also lead to hilarious moments when opposing players interact on the virtual battlefield. However, this could result in a worse experience for more casual gamers who just want to chat and play with their friends.

Can you turn off Warzone 2 proximity chat?

There has been no official statement from Call of Duty developers, so we can’t say for sure if you can turn off proximity chat. We assume you can turn it off, as it’s usually optional in other similar games and not everyone has a microphone or wants to chat with random teammates.

Note that if you turn it off, you won’t be able to hear or be heard by other players, so if you’re playing Warzone 2 with your friends, you probably need to be in some sort of party chat system. Hear each other, whether it’s Xbox or PlayStation party chat or Discord call. Alternatively, make good use of the ping system to avoid using your microphone.

There are many unanswered questions about how certain elements of proximity chat and normal gameplay will come together, but we’ll probably have to wait for Warzone 2’s release on November 16 to find out. This guide will be updated with all the proximity chat details you need in Warzone 2 when it becomes available.
