A Simple Trick to Free Up iPhone Storage

We have discussed many different ways to clear iPhone storage in the past, but here is a trick you may not know.

From clearing the Recently Deleted folder to reclaiming “Other” storage on your iOS device, there are many ways to free up storage space on your iPhone. However, there’s one trick we haven’t talked about that can free up gigabytes of space on your iPhone or iPad, and that just involves deleting and reinstalling apps.

For some users, storage is not a big concern, especially if they have 64GB or 128GB iPhones, but most users have 16GB or 32GB iPhones that need constant monitoring to ensure the storage limit is not reached. There are things you can do to easily get by with a 16GB iPhone, like checking your apps frequently, using the cloud more often, and sticking to casual and light games that don’t require much storage space.

However, if you’re looking for another way to easily clear storage space on your iPhone, deleting and reinstalling some apps can surprisingly free up some space on your device.

How does it work

It may seem strange that deleting and reinstalling an app frees up storage space on your iPhone, but it’s true. Applications create a cache during use, and this cache takes up storage space. Eventually, it can get to the point where it takes a gigabyte or two, especially if you use the app frequently every day.

Cache is essentially an app’s automatic download of information like text, images, and videos locally to your iPhone so that it doesn’t have to reload all that information the next time you open the app. Also, having a cache makes the app load faster.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing and can come in handy most of the time, but many apps on iPhone don’t automatically delete the old cache after a while and instead they all pile up until they take up quite a bit of storage space.

Facebook seems to be the biggest culprit for this, as a user was able to free up about 2GB of iPhone storage by deleting and reinstalling the app. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on how often you use the Facebook app, but it should at least free up a significant amount of space, especially if you’re doing this with a few apps on your home screen.

How to

To free up iPhone storage, all you have to do is delete and reinstall a simple app. To do this, we’ll use the Facebook app as an example. Just follow these simple steps:

While most apps have cache stored in the background, you don’t need to do this for every app you install. Mainly just Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, etc. Content-heavy apps. Again, your mileage will vary, but you should get something out of it, whether it’s a few hundred megabytes or a few gigabytes.
