Noise levels have always been an issue for most gaming laptops, as these machines pack some powerful hardware under the hood and the fans need to kick in at full speed to keep temperatures low. This often hampers the overall gaming experience for someone who spends thousands of dollars on a gaming laptop, but realizes that it looks like a jet engine. NVIDIA aims to address this issue with a new feature called Whisper Mode, announced at Computex 2017 in June. As long as you have a laptop powered by a GeForce GTX-10 series based graphics card (GTX 1060 or higher), you will be able to take full advantage of this feature. Before we tell you how to use this new feature, let’s discuss what Whisper Mode actually does:
What is NVIDIA Whisper Mode?
Whisper Mode, a new ultra-efficient Gaming mode that makes your plugged-in laptop run much quieter while gaming. NVIDIA introduced this new feature for all gaming laptops powered by a PC. GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card or higher. This mod works by intelligently limiting the framerate of a given game, while also configuring graphics settings for optimum power efficiency. Let’s say you have a powerful GPU that can run a game well above 60fps. Whisper Mode limits the game’s framerate to 60fps, and as a result, the fans aren’t spinning as fast as they used to because the GPU isn’t being fully utilized. This helps a lot in reducing the overall noise level of your gaming laptop.
Enable Whisper Mode in NVIDIA GeForce Experience
Option to enable/disable Whisper Mode, GeForce Experience software can be downloaded from the official site GeForce website. After installing the software make sure you are on the latest graphics driver available because Whisper Mode Requires GeForce 384.76 driver or higher. Once you’re done, simply follow these steps to activate Whisper Mode right away:
- Click gear icon in the top menu to go “Settings”.
- Go now “Games” section and you will notice “Whisper Mode” option located in the right pane of the window. Click on the slider To enable this feature
Customize Whisper Mode Using the NVIDIA Control Panel
Although you have Whisper Mode enabled, you can further customize the feature by restricting the FPS for each game individually. So, to set this up in seconds, simply follow these steps:
- Right click on your desktop and click “NVIDIA Control Panel” to open. Once inside, click on “Manage 3D settings” and go to “Program Settings” episode.
- Here you will be able to choose any of your favorite games from the drop-down menu. When you’re done, go to the option to see the Whisper Mode option. Now, click the dropdown menu To bring up the framerate restriction slider, decrease the maximum framerate by moving the slider to the left if noise level is your top priority, and increase it by moving the slider to the right if performance is your top priority.

Use NVIDIA Whisper Mode for Quieter Gaming
With Whisper Mode, you no longer have to worry about your laptop sounding like a jet engine while playing your favorite games. Depending on the hardware you have, Whisper Mode intelligently limits the framerate to achieve the perfect balance between GPU usage and noise levels. For demanding games like The Witcher 3, Whisper Mode limits the frame rate to 40fps by default. On the other hand, Battlefield 1, Overwatch etc. games have a 60fps limit.
