iOS 11 comes with several new features that add some great functionality not found in previous versions of the operating system. One of them is the option to turn off your iPhone without using the power button. While it’s not something you do every day, it’s still good to have this option, especially if you’re worried about overusing the power button for any reason. In that case, let’s get straight to the point and take a look at how to turn off your iPhone without using the power button:
Turn Off iPhone Without Using Power Button in iOS 11
note: We tried this on an iPhone 6s, an iPhone 7 Plus and an iPhone 8 Plus, all running iOS 11. Everything worked perfectly on all three devices.
- First, Tap the ‘Settings’ icon on your home screen and Choose ‘General’.
- Now go to the bottom where you will find it. ‘Close’ option. Tap on it and slide the red ‘Close’ button from left to right.

- This much! Your iPhone will now turn off without you having to tap the sleep/wake button.
Lock iPhone Without Using Power Button on iOS
While we don’t really need to turn our smartphones off on a daily basis, putting them to sleep or locking their screen is a process that repeats dozens of times a day, so in case you want to save your power button from everything. this additional workload, here’s how you can do it without touching the power button:
- go to Settings > General select as instructed in the previous section and then ‘Accessibility’ > Assistive Touch’.

- You will find a closed (gray) toggle by default. Just turn it on (green) and a floating Assistive Touch (Home) button As seen in the second picture below. You can do drag to any side of your screen according to your preference.

- Now tap the floating Assistive Touch (Home) buttonand you will find a bunch of available options to control your iPhone as seen in the left screenshot below. Just Tap on Device > Lock Screen To lock your iPhone

Being able to turn off your smartphone or put it to sleep without touching the power button is definitely a great way to preserve the integrity of the hardware, unless you’re one of those who want to replace their handset every year. or so. Personally, putting your phone to sleep without using the hardware switch is probably the more important part of the exercise, as this will probably save you clicking the button several times a day.
