Before exploring the full range of Apple Watch Series 2, it’s worth taking a quick look at the Apple Watch Series 1 to see if it will suit your needs. While there are some nice upgrades to the Watch Series 2, the new features will primarily benefit those who run, walk and/or swim. Apple Watch Series 2 has a brighter display, improved water resistance, improved processor and built-in GPS. The original Apple Watch Series 1 is splash-proof only, meaning it wasn’t designed to be used while swimming or in the shower. The faster processor in Apple Watch Series 2 means improved app performance, including faster screen refresh rates. The new watch’s built-in GPS means runners can leave their phones behind and still record their runs. This also means that hikers can plan and track their walks in areas with low cell phone signals. The most obvious difference between the two watches is that the Apple Watch Series 2’s screen is twice as bright as the original.

Apple Watch Series 2: 38mm – 42mm

Apple Watch Series 2 comes in two sizes: 38mm and 42mm. While it’s easy to think of the two models as sizes for ladies and men, measuring your wrist is more important because of your gender than using one or the other.

The 42mm Apple Watch is clearly larger and contains 30% more pixels than its smaller sibling. If you have large hands or are a little clumsy, you can opt for the larger Apple Watch for a better experience.

Apple Watch Series 2: Entry-Level Models

Like last year, Apple sells both Aluminum and Stainless Steel versions of the Apple Watch Series 2. Apple’s luxury product this year is made of ceramic instead of the ridiculously priced gold Watch Edition models. If you’re trying to save money, you’ll want to stick with the Aluminum versions of the Watch Series 2.

There are two basic Aluminum Apple Watch Series 2 models to choose from: the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Nike+, both starting at $369. Another thing to remember about the aluminum models is that they are slightly lighter than the more expensive stainless steel versions.

The standard Aluminum Apple Watch Series 2 looks pretty basic and comes in its basic configuration with a solid sports strap. The smaller 38mm Aluminum Apple Watch Series 2 starts at $369, while the larger 42mm version starts at $399. Since most people buy Apple Watches to serve as extensions of their iPhones rather than making fashion statements, these are the things we recommend to almost everyone. Most people will find at least one color combination that fits their style in the basic models. The watch itself comes in three different colors, including rose gold (pictured above), black, and silver. Pick your favorite aluminum color and pair it with any of the eight Sport Band colors and you’re ready. More expensive tapes can always be bought on the go.

For dedicated runners, fitters, or just a little younger, the Apple Watch Nike+ is your best bet. Starting at $369 (38mm) or $399 (42mm), Apple Watch Nike+ comes with a lightweight, flexible strap with perforations for better ventilation instead of a sturdy sports strap. There are several Nike watch faces unique to this model of Apple Watch that are designed to encourage you to run harder. Unfortunately, Apple Watch Nike+ won’t be available until the end of October, more than a month after the standard Apple Watch Series 2 models started shipping.

Apple Watch Series 2 Nike+ is available in four color combinations. You can choose between the Space Gray Aluminum case and the black band with yellow accents or the black band with gray accents. The Silver Aluminum Case comes with a silver band with yellow accents or a silver band with white accents. It goes without saying that those who work in more professional settings will want to stay away from groups with yellow accents as they are extremely conspicuous.

Apple Watch Series 2 Stainless Steel

After the basic aluminum Apple Watch Series 2, the next step is the stainless steel models. Some people prefer polished metal over anodized aluminum. The glossy surface looks more like what people are used to seeing in fashion watches.

The stainless steel Apple Watch Series 2 starts at $549 (38mm) and $599 (42mm). That’s a $180 premium over basic aluminum watches. The original Apple Watch in stainless steel came with a slightly nicer case and a metal-framed charging disc to distinguish it from the aluminum models, and we’re guessing it won’t be any different this year. Ultimately, it’s really up to you to get a 50% price advantage for a stainless steel case.

If you’re determined to buy an Apple Watch Series 2 to fit your wardrobe, you’ll have more flexibility with the stainless steel models than the aluminum ones. This version of the Apple Watch has a total of 13 strap options, including some leather straps. At the top of the price stack is the $1,499 Apple Watch Hermés with the Etoupe Swift Leather Double Buckle Cuff.

Apple Watch Edition: Ceramic

The most unique Apple Watch Series 2 is the Watch Edition, which is ceramic. Apple claims that the ceramic it uses to create the Watch Edition is four times harder than stainless steel, meaning it won’t scratch under normal use.

Apple claims that each Apple Edition ceramic case takes several days to make. Its glossy white finish will make a slightly understated fashion statement than the Apple Watch Hermés. At $1,249 (38mm) or $1,299 (42mm), you’d think Apple would throw something better than the Sport Band, which is the same thing found on the $369 aluminum Apple Watch base.
