We’ve known for several months with almost certainty that the iPhone 14 Pro will offer an always-on display. This innovation was made possible by the first use of an LTPO panel with a refresh rate from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. display such as autonomy level, weather or the progress of deliveries.
Today we’re learning a little more about how the display works, thanks to research from our colleagues at 9to5mac. Concretely, the latter will work more or less the same with Android smartphones that offer the option: after locking, the screen turns black and displays user-configured widgets. To this will be added a small variant made at Apple.
iPhone 14 Pro wallpapers will mimic Apple Watch
Indeed, there are several new wallpapers in iOS 16 that are slightly different from what we are used to seeing on the iPhone. Indeed, the latter is not static, but adapts to the situation in which the smartphone is located. In other words, when the always-on display is enabled, the image automatically darkens to better reveal the information on it.
Thus, the iPhone 14 Pro will mimic the behavior of the Apple Watch, which already offers this functionality. When the user locks their screen, the wallpaper automatically switches to this Standby mode, which ensures that the image is still visible on the smartphone. Of course, as soon as the latter is unlocked, the wallpaper returns to its normal brightness level without user intervention.
It is not yet clear how many of these live wallpapers Apple will offer, or even whether it will be a valid feature for all images.
