Adonit Snap Fine Point Pen Review

The new Adonit Snap fine tip pen for iPhone, iPad and Android adds a new trick to the pen. You can take pictures using your phone’s camera app. Pair the stylus with your phone or tablet and open the camera app. Install Adonit Snap and use it as a remote shutter release so you can take pictures with yourself in the shot or limit camera shake when you’re on a tripod instead of holding the phone.

Adonit sells Adonit Snap $34.99. At this price it’s very good, despite an issue I had when using it with my iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 10.2 beta. Later on.

Adonit Snap: Design

Most companies design their stylus to look like a round pen or pencil-sized device that feels like using your typical writing utensil. This creates a problem – where can I put it when I’m not using it? Samsung tried to fix this problem by placing the Galaxy Note stylus in a silo built into the phone. Microsoft tried to solve it by using a strong magnet to attach the Surface Pen to the Surface.

Adonit fixed the pencil storage issue with a flat carpenter pencil design and a magnet. Instead of a pencil in the form of a round barrel, we get a flat pencil with a built-in magnet. The package comes with a small metal plate with adhesive on one side. I put this on my iPhone 7 Plus case and the Adonit Snap magnetically holds the metal plate in place most of the time. Sometimes I take my phone out of my pocket and the stylus falls into my pocket or worse, falls to the floor. I haven’t lost yet, but I’m afraid of losing.

The tip of Adonit Snap looks like a fine-tipped pen. One side of the flat stylus also has a button next to the LED. Turn on the device or put it in pairing mode using this button. At the other end we get a micro-USB port so the user can plug the pen into their computer or a USB charger to charge the included rechargeable battery.

Adonit Snap: Bluetooth Remote Camera Shutter Release

Bluetooth pairing is simple. Press and hold the button until the LED starts flashing and then go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings to pair the device. It pairs easily with a single device. Once I paired it with my iPhone, I couldn’t easily pair it with a second device like my iPad or any other phone. This is just one weakness of the Bluetooth connectivity system in Adonit Snap.

The name Snap comes from the function that allows users to take a photo with the stylus while pairing with the phone. Open your phone’s camera app with the stylus connected to the phone via Bluetooth. Frame the photo and then press the button on Adonit Snap. The camera shutter fires and takes a picture.

Adonit Snap: Ink Performance

Adonit Snap is not pressure sensitive like some of its other devices. This means that no matter how hard the user presses, all lines and markings will measure the same thickness. It also does not include palm rejection. This stylus won’t do much for art and design, but it’s a great tool for taking notes or making simple sketches.

For just $35, it’s better than most cheap styli. Ink flows smoothly and quickly. Bluetooth styli will be out of sync where the stylus touches the screen, but the digital ink appears to be a very small distance from the point of the physical stylus. Some users reported having this problem, but I’ve never seen it.

Ink flow never misfires when fast typing in my favorite note apps for iOS and Android. I sometimes use it for retouching photos but mostly for taking notes.

The battery lasts for days and maybe even longer. I think it keeps popping up in my pocket when I accidentally touch or press keys while taking my phone out of my pocket.

The micro-USB cable connection feels weak and wobbles when I connect the cable.

Adonit Snap: Value and Recommendation

I have a lemon that won’t take the photo to my iPhone. It worked with an Android phone, but when I tried to take a picture with the iPhone camera, it did nothing. However, I got a backup that works fine.

Adonit offers stylus users a great deal on a fine-tipped pen and remote camera shutter for just $35. I like it and use it a lot. It is one of the best inserts available at this price and is compatible with Android and iOS.
