Like all apps, YouTube is committed to continually improving its services by regularly introducing new features. Most notable lately is probably the addition of graphics to the player to easily find the best moments of a video. Still, YouTube seems to ignore user requests for a certain feature for years.
Indeed, the community has been requesting for a long time to be able to allow videos to be streamed when exiting the app. Especially since Netflix and even Twitch have allowed this for a long time. Therefore, it will be necessary to wait until 2022 for this to finally become possible. In a statement released last night, Google announced that Picture-in-Picture, or PIP, will be made available worldwide.
The videos will continue in the background, but…
First, iPhone and iPad users will be served with at least iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. On Android, it will apparently have to wait a little longer because no date has been given by Google. As the Mountain View company explains, a small player will appear on the device’s screen while the app is running in the background. So it will be possible to continue your video while doing something else on your smartphone or tablet.
However, there is a catch. Indeed, on our part of the world this feature is only available to YouTube Premium subscribers. Only US users can access it without paying a subscription, which means it will be the same for us in the future. Also, Google states that Premium subscribers can take advantage of PIP for their music.
“We realize this is a slow rollout of a highly requested feature, and we want to thank everyone who shared their feedback during the experiments and patiently waited for this moment,” said Yapici. If you are a premium subscriber, simply go to the app settings in the tab. Generalto enable the option there.
