5 Things to Know About iOS 11.4.1 Update

Apple has released the iOS 11.4.1 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and the software comes with bug fixes and a new security feature for persistent iOS 11 issues.

With iOS 12 confirmed for fall, iOS 11.4.1 should be one of the last iOS 11 updates for iPhone X, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, and more. It’s not as big as the iOS 11.4 update, but it comes with fixes, patches, and key improvements for your device.

iOS 11.4.1 Update: What’s New

iOS 11.4.1 is a point release which means it is much smaller than the previous version iOS 11.4. iOS 11.4 was a landmark upgrade, and landmark upgrades always offer a nice mix of new features, fixes, and patches.

Although iOS 11.4.1 comes with a new security feature, it is focused on fixing bugs and improving security.

Apple’s iOS 11.4.1 changelog lists two bug fixes:

It also includes a bug fix that Apple didn’t mention in the changelog. Apples silently fixed a bug It caused devices to crash when using Taiwanese emoji or entering the word “Taiwan” in a text field in apps like Messages, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

The iOS 11.4.1 update also brings security improvements, including a new USB Restricted Mode available in Settings > Face ID/Touch ID and Passcode.

After your device has been locked for more than an hour, iOS will not allow USB accessories to connect to the device. This blocks software cracking tools like grayKey.

However, researchers at the cybersecurity firm elmsoft They discovered a loophole that resets the hour counter when a USB accessory is plugged into the iPhone’s Lightning port. Even Apple’s $39 Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter Works.

Here’s the situation, according to Oleg Afonin of ElcomSoft:

We ran a few tests and can now confirm that USB Restricted Mode is preserved through reboots and proceeds with software restores via Recovery mode. In other words, we didn’t find any obvious way to break USB Restricted Mode when it already kicked in.

What we discovered is that iOS will reset the USB Restriction Mode countdown timer even if you connect the iPhone to an untrusted USB accessory that has never been paired with the iPhone before (in fact, the accessories do not need to be paired). In other words, once a police officer has seized an iPhone, he must immediately connect that iPhone to a compatible USB accessory to avoid USB Restricted Mode lock after an hour. More importantly, this only helps if the iPhone still hasn’t entered USB Restricted Mode.

It is unclear how and when Apple will address this issue. For now, it means law enforcement has a way to circumvent the vehicle.

iOS 11.4.1 Issues

The iOS 11.4.1 update is causing various issues for some iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.

In addition to pulling the update through Settings, we’re also getting information about battery drain, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, Face ID, UI lag, Touch ID, 3D Touch, and issues with the first and third. As party apps move further away from the release date, we expect the list of issues to grow.

If you’re dealing with iOS 11.4.1 issues, you’re on your own until Apple releases the next iOS version.

Apple stopped logging in iOS 11.4; This means that if you are not satisfied with the performance of iOS 11.4.1, you can no longer downgrade your device to the previous version. The company also stopped signing out on older versions of iOS 11.

We don’t know when Apple will release or even release a new version of iOS 11, so if you run into problems after upgrading, you need to be proactive.

iOS 11.4.1 Jailbreak

Jailbreak developers have not released a generic tool for iOS 11.2, iOS 11.2.1, iOS 11.2.5, iOS 11.2.6, iOS 11.3, iOS 11.3.1, iOS 11.4 or iOS 11.4.1.

As of now, the only way to jailbreak a device running iOS 11 is if it’s running iOS 11.0 to iOS 11.1.2. Unfortunately, there is no way to upgrade to any of these updates.

The developers have managed to jailbreak Apple’s iOS 11.3 update, but there is no word on when or even when they will release a tool to the public. For now, jailbreak users need to stay on previous versions of iOS 11.

iOS 11.4.1 could be Apple’s last iOS 11 update.

The company is currently working on iOS 12, and the new operating system is currently in beta before being released globally this fall.

Unlike iOS 11.4.1, the iOS 12 update will introduce a long list of new features (including new emoji characters). It will also address the performance and quality issues that plague iOS 11.

iOS 12 will be released on all devices that can power the iOS 11 update. That includes the aging iPhone 5s and the company’s iPad mini 2.

We could see an iOS 11.4.2 update roll out in August, but don’t expect Apple to push an iOS 11.5 update to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch this summer.
