How to install M.2 SSD on PS5

Knowing how to install an M.2 SSD on a PS5 takes some expertise, but it’s not difficult once you know the steps. Definitely worth doing as the PS5 has 825GB of storage initially and less than that when you remove all the space required for the OS. While an external drive will work fine for playing PS4 games, you will need a suitable M.2 SSD if you want to store and play more PS5 games than standard console memory allows.

And to be clear about it – adding a new PS5 SSD to your console, expansion To your existing storage, not to replace the existing internal drive as on PS3 and PS4. This means you can continue to use the original 825GB SSD storage later, with new space added soon with the M.2 SSD.

1. Make sure you have the correct SSD for PS5

First, make sure the PS5 M.2 SSD you plan to install has a cooling structure that meets the PS5 specifications – you can learn more about it here: PlayStation Support. If you are installing your own heatsink on the M.2 SSD, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and make sure that the connections are not sealed in any way.

2. Make sure your PS5 firmware is up to date

Make sure your PS5 is updated to the latest firmware version and confirm everything is working properly before shutting down your console. Remove the base and any attached cables, then allow it to cool if necessary.

3. Remove the PS5 side panel

Touch a metal grounded object before starting to dissipate static electricity that can damage sensitive internal components. To avoid scratching the top panel, place the PS5 with the PS logo facing down and the power button away from you, ideally on a soft surface. 4. Remove the PS5 expansion cap

Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw holding the expansion cover in place and be careful not to drop the screw in when the PS5 comes out. Remove the cover from the slot and set it to one side.

Now you can see inside the expansion bay, carefully remove the screw in the end slot and set it to one side, then move the spacer it holds into the slot that corresponds to the size of your M.2 SSD.

5. Insert SDD into PS5

Holding the rear edge of your M.2 SSD, align it with the notch on the terminal, and then insert it firmly from the diagonal position.

With the M.2 SSD installed, tilt it down and lock it in place on the spacer using the smaller screw you removed earlier.

6. Reinstall PS5 covers

Then, reinstall the expansion cover using the larger screw you removed earlier. Finally, put the bottom panel back on the PS5 by loosely placing it on the top and then sliding it to the right; You will hear a click to confirm it is fixed in place.

Now you have successfully installed an M.2 SSD on your PS5, reconnect the base and all cables and then power on.
