Design
When you have to make your choice, we start with a very important issue, the design and production quality of the phone. At this point, Honor 5X stands out with its brushed aluminum design on the back, durability and pleasant to hold structure. It is easily forgiven for its tendency to dust a little too easily.
The Galaxy J7 is a little less surprising, with a matte plastic shell and metal borders. Once you get your hands on it, there’s no doubt that the materials are less noble and the overall look a little less neat than its competitors. In terms of design, we therefore rate the Honor 5X without hesitation.
Screen
The diagonal of both smartphones is 5.5 inches. The 5X is equipped with an IPS panel with Full HD 1080p definition and 401 dpi resolution. It offers good contrast, fairly accurate colors and good brightness. It clearly provides the essentials for a mobile at this price, without expecting the best displays to be found at the top of the range.
Galaxy J7 is equipped with an AMOLED panel with 720p HD resolution. On a diagonal of 5.5 inches, this provides a resolution of only 267 dpi, which was somewhat limited screen thinness in 2016. For the rest, it also offers quality colors and superior contrast to that of an IPS display. The description of the J7 unfortunately makes it lose that point.
Yield
In the left corner, the Honor 5X displays an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 SoC clocked at 1.5GHz, associated with 2GB of RAM. In the right corner, Galaxy J7 with built-in octa-core SoC, Exynos 7870, clocked at 1.59 GHz and also with 2 GB of RAM.
If both work very well on a daily basis and offer good multitasking, the Korean processor is better in benchmarks and faster in games. The 720p definition of the screen becomes an asset here. Matter goes to Galaxy J7!
Interface
The Honor 5X was launched under Android Lollipop, but the Marshmallow update that we were able to test is rolling out. Samsung’s mobile was launched directly (later) under the latest version of Android. The duel is therefore balanced by the EMUI interface on one side and Samsung TouchWiz on the other.
The Honor 5X interface is customizable, including features related to physical keys and fingerprint reader. TouchWiz also maintains itself well in its latest version with many new features. The difference in your preferences in terms of interface will be here. It’s hard to decide between them, we vote!
Camera
Both have a 13-megapixel rear sensor and a 5-megapixel front sensor. Not so, considering the Galaxy J7 makes a difference with its f/1.9 aperture on the rear. The rival of the day is generally better in many cases, and the HDR mode is tough, as we noted in our Honor 5X test.
Night photos are also better on the Chinese smartphone, leaving its Korean rival at this point. The Honor 5X is more than an ultimate photophone, so it outperforms the J7, which took a victory this round.
Autonomy
This is where both are very good, but the Galaxy J7 2016 still stands out. For the same screen diagonal, the 3300 mAh battery, HD definition and good optimization of the Exynos SoC give a significant advantage to the Samsung mobile that can last for 2 days without much difficulty.
The Honor 5X does not compromise with its 3000 mAh battery that can accompany you for a day and a half before recharging. So, even if we are clearly in the presence of permanent smartphones, the advantage of the J7 at this point.
Price and Conclusion
A word about price. At the time of this writing, the Honor 5X is around 230 euros, while the Galaxy J7 is more expensive at over 260 euros. A difference of around €30 which can’t be ignored in this price range.
