Today we want to show you how to speed up your iPhone, whether it’s an older model like iPhone 7, iPhone 6s or iPhone 5.
If your iPhone isn’t as fast as you’d like, your first thought might be to take it to the nearest Apple Store. But why spend an hour or more at the Apple Store (or more if you don’t have it nearby) when you can speed up your iPhone from your computer chair or couch in a matter of seconds.
Right now you don’t need to be an Apple Genius or even an expert to speed up your iPhone. All you need is a few seconds during a quiet part of the day.
If your iPhone is starting to slow down, try one of these solutions. Some of these will work better than others, so you may have to use trial and error until you find the right combination for you and your iPhone.
Restart your iPhone
A simple reboot can have a significant impact on your device’s speed, especially if you haven’t turned it off in a while.
To turn off your phone, press and hold the power button until the prompt appears. Follow the onscreen instructions and turn off your iPhone.
Wait for a minute and then press and hold the power button again to turn the phone back on.
Open area
If you’ve owned your iPhone for a while, you’ve probably collected a ton of clutter on your device’s hard drive. If you’re anywhere near the threshold of your hard drive, you’re going to want to do some cleaning. Freeing up space can speed up your iPhone.
To get started, go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage and select Manage Storage.
From this screen you can determine what can stay and what should go. Maybe it’s a game you no longer play, a video you no longer watch, or hundreds of photos you no longer need. You should be able to find something to delete.
Deleting your messages can save you a lot of space and help speed up your iPhone.
If you notice that your messages are taking up more than one GB of storage, it might be a good idea to get this checked out.
To reduce the amount of messages saved on your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages and go to Message History.
Tap Keep Messages and select 1 Year or 30 Days. This will delete messages older than a year or 30 days, so be sure to save the photos and videos in these messages that you want to keep.
Clear Browser Cookies and Data
You can also free up memory space by clearing your browser’s cookies and data.
If you’re using Safari, go to your iPhone’s Settings > Safari > and go to Clear History and Website Data. Tap this.
Clearing this will remove your browsing history, cookies and other data from Safari. The history will also be cleared from all devices signed into your iCloud account.
If you can handle this, tap on Clear History and Data again.
If you’re using Google Chrome on your iPhone, you’ll want to go to the app itself and tap the three vertical circles in the top-right corner.
From here, tap Settings > Privacy > Clear Browsing Data. There, you can choose the ones you want to delete. If you’re noticing serious lag on your iPhone, it might be a good idea to start clean.
Select all of them (after doing this you will see a checkmark on the right) and then click Clear Browsing Data.
Download Latest Software
If you haven’t been able to install iOS 10.3 or iOS 10.3.1 and you haven’t installed iOS 10.3.2 on your iPhone, you’ll want to consider this.
Apple’s iOS 10.3 update introduced a brand new file system called APFS. If you choose not to install iOS 10.3, iOS 10.3.2 will automatically convert your device’s file system from HFS+ to APFS.
Installing iOS 10.3.2 and APFS can improve your device boot time (the time it takes for the phone to boot from off), overall speed (our iPhone 5 feels faster with iOS 10.3.2 and APFS), and again a storage boost that can boost your device’s speed. .
Upgrading to iOS 10.3.2 can seem daunting for those of you who have older iPhone models on older versions of iOS.
If you’re crossing the line, take a look at our full list of reasons to install iOS 10.3.
Turn Off Animations
Turning off some of your iPhone’s animations and transitions can give a small boost to your device’s overall speed.
To reduce Motion Effects, go to your iPhone’s Settings > General > Accessibility and turn on Reduce Motion. Turning it on disables some features in the Messages app, like the bubble effect.
While you’re there, you’ll also want to reduce the transparency and blur effects on your iPhone. This can help your iPhone’s GPU.
On your iPhone, tap Increase Contrast to Decrease Transparency, then tap the toggle to turn on the Reduce Transparency function.
Disable Widgets
Try reducing the amount of active widgets to see if this gives your iPhone a speed boost.
If your iPhone has many active widgets, they may be consuming your device’s precious resources and thus hindering its overall speed.
Swipe right on your iPhone’s home screen to start closing widgets. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the widget list and select Edit.
Disable iPhone widgets to increase the speed of your device.
You will be taken to a new screen where you will see a long list of services and applications. These are your widgets. If a widget is active, you will see a red circle with a minus sign to the left of its name. If it’s inactive, you’ll see a green cross.
To remove a widget, tap the red circle with a minus sign, then tap Uninstall. You can remove all or some of them if needed.
Delete Apps
We also recommend that you master your applications. Just because you no longer use an app doesn’t mean it no longer consumes your device’s precious resources.
If you no longer need an app, get rid of it. If for some reason you decide you still want to use it on your iPhone, you can redownload it anytime from the App Store.
End Background Processes
If you’re not good at managing apps and services on your iPhone, there’s a good chance some of your apps and services have become resource hogs. Dealing with your background running stuff can pay dividends.
The first service to look at is Background Refresh. When Background Refresh is turned on, your apps will be refreshed with new information while running in the background. Good, but that might be the reason for your delay.
If you don’t need instant data, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn Background Refresh off. This kills the service completely.
If you prefer to whitelist certain apps, go to your list and turn off Background Refresh for individual apps.
If you have Auto Download turned on, you may have apps downloading new content in the background.
To disable Automatic Downloads, go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores > and turn off Music, Apps, Books and Audiobooks, and Updates.
Erase your device
If these quick fixes don’t help you speed up your iPhone in seconds, it’s time to hit the red button and switch to nuclear power.
If you’re using an older phone like the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s, it might be time to wipe the phone and start over. We did this recently on our iPhone 5 and the results are amazing. It feels 100 times faster than before.
restore your iPhone it will take more than a few seconds to complete as you will need to start by making a backup.
After backing up your iPhone, you’ll want to go to Settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to get started.
