One of the biggest leaps forward from the Honor 8 is its design. Honor has worked at this point, especially when the Honor 7 is already showing nice lines. This year the Honor 8 mixes aluminum and glass. The brand has applied at least 15 layers of glass to provide an admirable “reflection” effect.

The lines are fine, clean. On the back, Honor has put a lot of effort into integrating a dual photo sensor that fits perfectly into the contours of the smartphone. Nothing surpasses it, a pleasure. On the front, we greatly appreciate the excellent size-to-screen ratio.

The Honor 8 offers a 5.2 inch display but the format looks really compact. In the hand, the Honor 8 is very nice, especially since the edges are well machined and rounded for a good grip.

We are dealing with excellent work. Overall, however, the Honor 8 is nicer to hold and look at. Details such as the really “sleek” reflections of the Honor 8 and its excellent size/screen ratio are being played around.

Display: AMOLED always on top

Honor has done a great job. 5.2 inch Full HD IPS display with 424 ppi resolution. The display is very bright and offers faithful color rendering. Once again the size-to-screen ratio is excellent, especially with very thin borders around the edges.

Despite the high quality of the Honor 8 display, which has nothing to envy the best on the market, Samsung still on top with its Full HD Super Amoled display 5.2 inches. The Korean perfectly masters Amoled technology, and the Galaxy A5 2016 has perhaps the best display the firm has integrated into one of its smartphones. Viewing angles are excellent, brightness is near perfect. It’s hard to find a better one on the market.

Performances: homemade duel

As for the previous top level, Honor has integrated an internal processor Kirin 950. It comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. In terms of performance, the Honor 8 shows more than good results. It doesn’t reach the highest level of performance on the market, but it can easily handle heavy usage.

We were even able to test the gaming sessions with the Honor 8, which performs flawlessly without blinking, even in graphics-intensive games. In terms of power, Honor has done an excellent job and its optimized finish makes it work wonders for a smartphone at this price.

The Galaxy A5 2016 is also equipped with an in-house processor, the Exynos 7580, which is roughly comparable to a Snapdragon 615 integrated into mid-range smartphones. However, we see lower graphics performance, especially in more graphically demanding games. If the Galaxy A5 2016 remains good in terms of performance and meets the needs of most users, it’s still a tiny notch below the Honor 8’s.

A quick point to the two fingerprint sensors, as both smartphones have them. Obviously, at this point, Honor 8 is far ahead. The multi-functional fingerprint sensor allows you to retract the uses of the smartphone while that of the Galaxy A5 2016 is relatively simple.

Honor always seemed to be able to optimize its batteries well. Honor 7 was already very good in this area, Honor 8 is at the top with its 3000 mAh battery in this regard. During our testing, we were surprised at the autonomy of Honor’s top model.

Very simple, for standard use you can: achieve two days of autonomy quite comfortably. A day and a half if you are a heavy user. The Honor 8 is undoubtedly one of the best on the market this side.

But among the best are the Galaxy A5 2016 and its 2900 mAh battery. Samsung has also done a great job on battery life with its mid-range smartphone. It is also frequently cited as a reference in this field.

Like the Honor 8, Galaxy A5 2016 easily lasts two days without needing to be recharged. If you are a heavy user, wait a day and a half. The Galaxy A5 2016 surprised us in our test a few months ago. Very well-balanced, Samsung’s mid-range smartphone has something to seduce: AMOLED display on the top, outstanding autonomy, good performance, very neat design.

But for the same price, Honor 8 offers more advanced features and crushes his opponent at certain points. If design is a matter of taste, we must admit that Honor has done a remarkable job on this side. As for autonomy, the two models are equal. But it’s in terms of performance and camera that the Honor 8 really takes over. Two criteria that are still very important for many users.
