8 Best Ways to Fix Keyboard Lag on Windows 10

Most of us spend our days hammering the keyboard. This is very true for writers, coders, translators and other professionals whose primary job involves writing. Looking at how the keyboard is one of the most important accessories for all computer users, keyboard lag on Windows computers can be fatal.

It may look like you’re typing really fast, but the text doesn’t appear on the screen in real time. Sometimes, there may be a delay or delay of one or more seconds. This can disrupt your train of thought and lead to unwanted disturbances. Let’s find out what we can do about it.

1. Reboot and Reconnect

Are you using an external keyboard to type? I suggest a quick reboot after saving your work and reconnecting the keyboard once. This simple little trick once worked for me. It won’t take more than a few minutes. The same advice applies to wireless keyboard users. I suggest you check the batteries as well.

2. Different Keyboard

If you have a spare keyboard, try a different keyboard to make sure there is no problem with the keyboard you are using. You can also use the existing keyboard on a different computer to check if there is a software or hardware related problem.

3. Turn Off Filter Keys

Stage 1: Search for and open Filter keys in the Start menu or Settings.

Step 2: Turn off the filter keys.

4. Character Repeat Rate

Some users have had success after maxing out the character repeat rate. Here’s how to do it.

Stage 1: Press Windows key+R to open the Run dialog and type control keyboard before pressing Enter.

Step 2: Set the repeat rate bar to maximum and save the settings.

5. Troubleshooter

Windows 10 comes with a built-in troubleshooter that can help with a number of common errors and errors.

Stage 1: Press Windows key+I to open Settings and search for ‘Find and fix keyboard problems’.

Step 2: In the popup that follows, select Apply repairs automatically and click Next. From now on you will simply follow the on-screen instructions.

There used to be another option in the troubleshooting menu for ‘hardware and devices’, but Microsoft has removed it. You can still access it from the Command Prompt.

Stage 1: Search and open Command Prompt from the Start menu with administrative rights by clicking on Run as administrator.

Step 2: Issue the following command and then you will see a popup similar to the one we saw above.

msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic 

Stage 3: Follow the onscreen instructions and check if you still notice keyboard lag on your Windows 10 computer.

6. Check Drivers

There are three things you can control. Try rolling back the drivers to an older version, updating the drivers to the latest version, and finally reinstalling. We have already written a detailed guide on Windows drivers for you.

7. New User Profile

Creating a new Windows user profile can help. If you already have a different profile, switch to that profile from the Start menu to check if the keyboard is still lagging on your computer. You can also quickly create a new one.

Stage 1: To open Settings again, press Windows key+I and go to Accounts > Family & other users. Click on ‘Add someone else to this PC’.

Step 2: Click ‘I don’t have this person’s login information’.

Stage 3: Click ‘Add a user without a Microsoft account’ and then follow the onscreen instructions.

You have just created a guest account. It’s easy to convert a guest account to an administrator account later. Check if you continue to encounter lags while typing on the keyboard.

8. Run DISM Command

The DISM command is primarily used to mount a Windows image and then service it. It can help fix several different types of bugs and errors.

Stage 1: Open Command Prompt again from the Start menu with administrative rights.

Step 2: Issue the following commands one by one. Wait a few minutes in between.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
