Google Chrome updates come quite often and it’s wise to let this happen automatically on your Mac. Usually everyone just lets Chrome update itself and keep browsing. Many Chrome users have complained about noticing a weird message ‘Managed by your organization’ under Chrome’s settings menu. Everyone’s first instinct is to figure out how to remove ‘Managed by your organization’ from Chrome.
I was confused when I saw this message in Chrome on my Mac because it is not part of any business network. This got me down the rabbit hole of looking for ways to get rid of it. Random reset and reinstall of Chrome failed to remove the message. However, I followed these solutions and it helped me remove “Managed by your organization” in Chrome on Mac.
Why Is Chrome Showing ‘Managed By Your Organization’ Message?
The Google Chrome 73 browser update brought the ‘Managed by your organization’ message to the menu for all platforms.
There are only three reasons why Chrome might show this message on your Mac:
- Your Chrome is managed by your organization.
- A malware, adware, or an app has injected an unknown policy or a profile in Chrome.
- You have enabled or disabled certain features such as Incognito Mode, Guest Mode or others.
In Chrome, enter chrome://management and you should see a message – Your browser is managed. This confirms a policy that governs Chrome. Fortunately, there are several solutions to get rid of this annoying message completely. Lets start.
Check for Potential Malware or Adware
The first course of action is to check if your Mac is infected with malware or adware. This is all about sticking to the basics and making sure there are no other software or adware causing the issue.
We recommend using Malwarebytes to scan Chrome and the rest of your Mac for malware, malware, adware or malicious apps.
Make sure you exit all other applications and services while running the Malwarebytes Scan.
After completing the scan, the app will show you if there is any malware on your Mac. If there are, you can quarantine or delete them all. If your system is not infected with any adware or malware then you should check the next solution.
Remove Chrome Policies on Mac
If your Mac is provided/owned by your organization, the IT administrator may be using several policies to manage Chrome settings for all employees. This policy can be as innocuous as disabling Incognito mode in Chrome on Mac and Windows. Also, third-party software may have silently installed a policy to monitor your online activities. If Malwarebytes was able to remove it or failed to show any fruitful results, then you need to fix Chrome policies.

To remove such policies from your Mac, you must follow the steps below.
Stage 1: Launch Chrome and type chrome://policy in the address bar.
Step 2: Check for any policies listed under the Chrome Policies heading. On my Mac, Chrome had the policy ‘IncognitoModeAvailability’ listed with a policy value of 1 – that means it’s enabled. If the policy value is 0, it means that the policy is not active, but the activation condition exists.
Stage 3: Launch the Terminal application. You can press Command + Space shortcut to launch Spotlight, type terminal in the search bar and hit enter to launch the application.
Step 4: Make sure you exit Chrome. Then use the defaults tool command in Terminal to delete the relevant policy.
In my case I used the following command and pressed Enter:
defaults delete com.google.Chrome IncognitoModeAvailability
This should remove the IncognitoModeAvailability policy as seen in Step 2.
defaults delete com.google.Chrome [policy name]
Use the full policy name instead of the square brackets shown in the command above.
Reset Google Chrome
After removing any suspicious policy, you need to reset Chrome settings to default.
Stage 1: Type chrome://settings in the address bar and scroll down on that page to click on Advanced at the bottom.
Step 2: Scroll down and click – Reset settings to original defaults.
You can also clear all browsing data from the chrome://settings/privacy menu. After that exit Chrome and restart it. Alternatively, just for your sanity, you can uninstall and reinstall Chrome from your Mac. It won’t make much difference, but you try.
This should prevent Chrome from showing the ‘Managed by your organization’ message on Mac.
Finally
These solutions will help you remove malware or unwanted Chrome policies from the browser and make the browser work optimally again.
