How to Backup Chat in Line Chat App 1

How to Backup Chat in Line Chat App

Line is an instant messaging application made in Japan. This is their most popular social network and is also very popular in Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand. Line has some unique features not seen in other similar apps such as following official accounts and playing Face Play games, which has proven to be a huge success.

However, it is primarily a chat app. Sometimes you may want to make a backup copy of a chat so that it is not lost or accidentally deleted. In this article, we will show you how to backup and restore your chats on Android and iOS devices.

Saving Data

The chat backup process has changed in newer versions of the Line app. Additionally, not only can you back up your chat on both Android and iOS devices, you can also back it up directly to your Google Drive if you’re using an Android device.

Backup Chats as Text Files

You can choose to backup chats as text files, but note that Line cannot restore chats saved in this format. The process is exactly the same on Android and iOS and goes like this:

  1. Enter the chat room of your choice.
  2. Tap the “V” button located in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Go to “Settings” or “Chat settings”.
  4. Select “Export chat history” and you’re done.

Backup Chat on Android

Here’s how to do it on older Android app versions without Google Drive:

  1. Find the “Chats” tab.
  2. Find the chat you want to back up.
  3. There should be a “V” in the top right corner of the chat. Tap.
  4. Go to “Chat Settings”.
  5. From there, select “Back up chat history”.
  6. Go to “Back up text” or “Back up all data”.

Note: By choosing “Back up text” you only save text, not stickers, photos, videos, and photo messages. You can save that too, but instead you have to select the “Back up all data” option. Do this for each chat you want backed up.

You should be able to restore backed up chats, which we’ll cover in a moment. By the way, do not forget to copy the backup file to another place, for example, to an SD memory card or a computer.

If you’re using a Line version newer than 7.5.0, you can use Google Drive to both backup and restore your chats. Make sure you have a strong internet connection and enough free storage space. Here’s how to do this:

  1. Go to the “Other” or “Friends” tab.
  2. Enter the settings.
  3. Tap “Chats”.
  4. Find “Back up and restore chat history”.
  5. Select “Back Up to Google Drive”.

Restore Chat on Android

Whether or not you used Google Drive to back up your chats, the restore process should stay pretty much the same. According to the official Line website, you need an SD memory card to do this, but Google Keep can be considered an alternative method. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Enter the chat room of your choice.
  2. Tap the “V” button located in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. From there, go to “Import chat history”.

Note: You must do this for each chat you want to restore.

Restore Chat on iOS

To restore your chats, you must first turn on your iCloud and then transfer your Line account to another device. If you don’t turn on iCloud before transferring your account, you may need to reinstall the Line app. Also note that you cannot restore chats or restore any images and stickers from Line’s settings.

After successfully transferring your Line account to another device, a screen will appear asking if you want to restore your chat history. Here all you have to do is tap on “Restore chat history”.

If necessary, you can change your settings by signing in to iCloud and using the Apple ID you used to back up your chats. You should open iCloud Drive and then open Line.

Stop Talking

While the chances of conversations getting lost are minimal, the backup feature can be useful to keep track of important information more easily or to preserve some moments and conversations that are only meaningful to you.
