Design: glass, frameless and notch
Three smartphones in this selection Notch fashion launched by iPhone X in 2017. If the iPhone XS and OnePlus 6 are covered by a large notch, the Mate 20 is distinguished by the integration of a small drop-shaped notch. If the notch bothers you, the smartphone may entice you, especially since it is the most original model in our comparison with the triple square photo sensor.
Very high quality, all three covered in glass suits. Regardless, the iPhone XS is the only smartphone to benefit from wireless induction charging. For the weirdest, we’ll point out that the iPhone XS is the only model to get IP68 certification. The Mate 20 is IP53 certified (and not protected against submersion) and the OnePlus 6 does not benefit from any certification. It should also be noted that unlike its two competitors, the iPhone XS is not equipped with a jack port.
Display: iPhone XS takes over
With its 6.53 inch 2244 x 1080 pixel IPS LCD screen, the Huawei Mate 20 quickly stands out in this area. Very bright, the flagship’s display is nonetheless particularly well integrated into the build. Unfortunately, it doesn’t qualify for the competition opting for an OLED screen.
OnePlus 6 is developed with a 6.28 inch Full HD 2280 x 1080 pixel panel. The smartphone display is particularly pleasant to use, with balanced colors and controlled contrasts. Oneplus 6 still doesn’t match iPhone XS and 5.8 inch 2436 x 1125 pixels screen. The image is simply amazing. It’s on par with the Galaxy Note 9 in this area. A great success.
Performance: Apple A12 Bionic outperforms the competition
At the heart of the 3 flagships are 3 different high-end SoCs: Apple A12 Bionic, Kirin 980 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. Unlike its two rivals, the OnePlus 6 is not equipped with an in-house SoC. In the field of raw performance, benchmarks give an undeniable advantage to the iPhone XS, which stands out as the most powerful smartphone of the moment. On Geekbench, the iPhone XS climbs to 11,420 in multi-core. Despite its 3GB of RAM, it completely strays from Android powerhouses like the Galaxy Note 9 or Xiaomi Black Shark.
Located just below the iPhone XS, the Huawei Mate 20 manages to be the most powerful Android smartphone of the year. This top performance is owed to the smartphone SoC Kirin 980. Despite Huawei’s promises, the SoC is not as powerful as the A12 Bionic but it is sending heavy! Thanks to its artificial intelligence integration, the flagship also adapts to your habits and uses. In the Geekbench test, it goes up to 9597 in multi-core.
In the last place we find the OnePlus 6. With its SoC Snapdragon 845 and 6 or 8 GB of RAM, it does not deserve it. Smooth, fast and efficient, the Chinese smartphone is one of the fastest we’ve been able to test. In use, the performance difference with the Mate 20 is almost imperceptible. In the Geekbench test, the beast even rises to the 9011, which is not far from the Mate 20.
Autonomy: OnePlus 6 stands out!
In the field of autonomy, iPhone XS is completely outpaced by its rivals. With a larger battery, the iPhone XS Max doesn’t last more than a day and a half with moderate use. We can expect the iPhone XS to be a little underpowered. It’s also a sin less efficient fast charging More than OnePlus 6 or Huawei Mate 20.
At this point, two Android smartphones are in a pocket wipe. With its 3300mAh battery, the OnePlus 6 will last two days in a row with normal use without needing to be charged. We owe this good performance to the optimization of Oxygen OS. It also stands out for its stunningly fast charging feature, which gives your battery 50% autonomy in just 30 minutes of charging.
The same observation on the Huawei Mate 20 side. With 4000mAh battery almost as durable as the OnePlus 6 or Galaxy Note 9. The smartphone will easily last up to 2 days without recharging for normal use. Like its rival, it exits the game thanks to a surprisingly fast charge (25% in 15 minutes). Still, we’ll give the victory to the OnePlus 6, which is a bit more enduring in use. However, keep in mind that only the iPhone XS is compatible with wireless charging.
Is the Huawei Mate 20 better in photos than the iPhone XS?
On the photography side, the OnePlus 6 isn’t the weight. Despite the dual 16-megapixel photo sensors with lens aperture at f/1.7, OIS and EIS stabilization, the OnePlus 6 fails in low light. Likewise, the portrait mode was a bit of a disappointment to us, especially since the smartphone takes very detailed photos in good conditions.
Thanks to the successful integration of artificial intelligence and Leica’s 12MP (f/1.8) + 16MP (f/2.2) + 8MP (f/2.9 – telephoto) triple photo sensor, the Huawei Mate 20 s stands out as one of the best in the world. The best photo smartphones of 2018. Photos are of high quality: sharpness is very good, colors are true-to-life and contrasts are controlled. In low light, the Mate 20 surprises with detailed photos. Artificial intelligence actually allows the smartphone to correct imperfections in every shot.
Faced with this great performance, the 2 MP f/1.8 + 12 MP f/2.4 dual sensors of the iPhone XS struggle to keep up. The flagship still takes excellent photos in good conditions, but lags a bit as soon as the light starts to run out. For photography enthusiasts, the iPhone XS is still more convincing than the OnePlus 6. At this point, the Mate 20 is largely a winner.
Price: cheap to very expensive
Starting at 1159 euros, the iPhone XS is the most expensive smartphone in our comparison. The Huawei Mate 20 facing it is available for €799 or more than €300 less. The OnePlus 6 is even half price at just €519. Basically, you get two OnePlus 6s for the price of an iPhone XS! For the tightest of budgets, this is probably the smartphone for you!

However, the OnePlus 6 isn’t just about saving a few bucks. The Chinese smartphone is fast, durable, intuitive, fluid and elegant.
