Does your neck hurt? Maybe you slept funny. Or maybe it was three hours in a row that you spent hunching over a tiny screen and watching silly little videos. We don’t judge. We won’t even tell you to “get out” or “drink a glass of water”. But to save you some pain and physiotherapy, may we suggest: TikTok on desktop.

TikTok is best known as a mobile app, but the desktop version of the platform includes many of the same features on a larger screen (and significantly less neck pain).

Can you use TikTok on desktop?

Short answer: yes, you can use TikTok on desktop.

The desktop version of TikTok works similarly to the mobile version, but since desktops have more real estate to work with, you can see more of TikTok’s features on a single screen.

After opening the TikTok mobile app, users are taken directly to their For You Page and can use the buttons to like, comment and share TikTok or navigate to other parts of the app (Search, Discover, Profile, Inbox). You can also switch to “Following” view to see a stream of content only from followed accounts and finally + Press the button to start recording TikTok.

From tiktok.com, desktop users have access to all of the same features (EXCEPT the ability to save a TikTok directly within the site). The desktop version replaces this “Save” button with a “Load” button; it’s the cloud-like icon in the upper-right corner of the screenshot above.

TikTok for desktop’s left menu also suggests accounts to follow, shows accounts you’re already following, and displays trending hashtags and voices.

Also worth considering is the “Messages” tab; On mobile devices all notifications and direct messages are accessed via the Inbox, but on desktop DMs are separated into their own tabs.

How to download TikTok videos on PC or Mac

Starting March 2021, you cannot directly download videos from TikTok’s desktop site to your PC or Mac. A simple workaround is to download the video to your mobile device and then email it to yourself.

To download a TikTok to your mobile device, go to the TikTok you want to download, press the “Share” arrow at the bottom right of your screen, then Save Video. After recording the video, you can attach it to an email from your camera roll.

How to manage TikTok notifications on desktop

Since TikTok for desktop has a larger screen (most of the time – isn’t it crazy that mobile tech got off to such a big start, really shrinking and now growing again?), you can see more features at once, and this is especially helpful for notifications.

It’s easy to filter notifications by type on your desktop. Just go to the top right and click Inbox icon just to the left of your profile picture.
