MKBHD had already done the same test in 2018, and the results so surprised him that he decided to do the same blind test again in 2019. This year the youtuber has tested at least 16 smartphones: OnePlus 7T, Asus ZenFone 6, Huawei Mate 30 Pro, Asus ROG Phone 2, Samsung Note 10+, Royole FlexPai, Google Pixel 3a, LG G8X, Samsung Galaxy S10e, Xiaomi Mi Note 10, iPhone 11 Pro, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Sony Xperia 1, Huawei P30 Pro and Redmi K20 Pro. Either a nice assortment of very new smartphones.
Marques Brownlee then asked an assistant to take the same photos with all these smartphones under the same conditions, and asked Internet users to rate their favorite photo without saying which smartphone each photo corresponds to. That’s why 16 smartphones competed with another random smartphone model. Therefore, the winner of this duel was in competition with the winner of another duel, so that only two smartphones remained in the 3rd round.
Conclusion ? Forget the DxOMark ranking – you can indeed have a lot of surprises! The first of these is the iPhone 11 Pro. This year, Apple has been rumored to be returning to the photography game. And yet… the smartphone is making a first-round payoff against the OnePlus 7T Pro, which sells for twice as much as the iPhone 11 Pro. But wait, it’s not over: photos of the Asus Zenfone 6 are blasting photos of the classic OnePlus 7T in the first round. Unsurprisingly, the Mate 30 Pro lands in the second round against the Asus ROG Phone 2. The Note 10+ wins the Royole Flexpai. The Google Pixel 3a performs well against the LG G8X.
Galaxy S10e goes to the next round against Xiaomi Mi Note 10. Just like the Google Pixel 4 versus the Xperia 1 and the Redmi K20 Pro against the Huawei P30 Pro (yes, yes!). The winners of the second round are the Mate 30, which found itself against the Note 10+. And the S10e facing the Pixel 4. In the end, the final duel takes place between the Note 10+ and Galaxy S10e (and the winners are the Note 10+ photos). Of course, this blind test is flawed. First, depending on the initial draw, the final result can vary significantly.
As it was later shared on twitter where the photos were compressed (moreover, all the same). But this has the downside of preventing pixel-level comparisons (knowing that the iPhone 11 Pro is particularly good at this point, for example). Still, we really like the surprises of this blind test, as they show how subjective the assessment of photo quality is and it’s worth testing smartphones and their photos before taking a photo. purchase decision.
