When you have lots of notes to manage, keeping them all organized becomes the need of the day. Otherwise, you’ll have to scour the entire app, making finding a particular note tedious. Well, the native Apple Notes app has a fix for that. If you’re a loyal Apple Notes user, you’ve probably appreciated the inclusion of tags in the note-taking app with iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Using tags, you can keep all your notes organized and find them extremely easily. So, let’s take a look at how to organize notes with tags in the Apple Notes app on iPhone and iPad.
Use Tags to Organize Notes on iPhone and iPad (2021)
Apart from bringing support for tags, Apple has also added a super useful feature called Smart Folder. It automatically organizes your notes into folders by tags. So, if you find it tedious to manage notes manually, Smart Folders can come in very handy for you.
It’s worth noting that once you add tags to notes in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS 12 Monterey, they will only be supported on iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, and macOS 11.3 Big Sur and above. Let’s start with that in mind.
Create Notes with Tags in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15
- Open the Notes app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Now create a new note or open an existing note. After that create a new tag for your note. simply Enter the “#” tag followed by your text. For example, we added the hashtag #Beebom to our note in the screenshot below. After you enter a tag, be sure to add a space to end it. Now, your label will turn yellow.
And voila! You have successfully added tags to your note. Now, note this:
- You can place the tags anywhere in the note depending on your needs.
- Both iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 allow you to use multiple tags in a note.
- You can use any font size for your labels.
- Make sure your tags turn yellow to be searchable and appear under the tags section in the Notes app.
Manage Your Tagged Notes in the Apple Notes App
To view and manage your tags, go to the Notes app home page and follow the steps outlined below.

2. Now, you should see: new tags section at the bottom of this page. Next, “All Tags” option to check all tagged notes. You can also choose a specific label to view, search and sort your tagged notes

4. Now a menu with multiple options will appear from the bottom. Below we’ve explained what each option does.
- View as gallery: Shows your notes in gallery view. By default, notes appear in list view.
- Select Notes: It allows you to select notes to move, tag or delete in bulk.
- Sort Grades By: It allows you to sort notes by title, date created, date edited, oldest to newest, and newest to oldest.
note: When viewing the notes for a particular tag, tap the three-dot icon and you will have the option to create a Smart Folder. It allows you to automatically organize notes by tags. We’ll discuss it in the next section.
How to Create a Smart Folder in Apple Notes on iPhone and iPad
Smart Folder allows you to organize your notes according to the tags you choose. If you don’t want to waste your precious time manually managing notes, this is the way to go.
- Hungry Notes app Go to the main (Folders) screen on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap now. folder button ” in the lower left corner of the screen.New Smart Folder” choice.
note: Alternatively, you can tap on a specific label and then the three horizontal dots in the upper-right corner of the screen and select the Create Smart Folder option.
2. Now enter a suitable name and select preferred tags. Make sure you tap ” .Completed” in the upper right corner to finish.
This much. You have successfully created a Smart Folder in the Apple Notes app. Now it’s also easy to detect a smart folder like this: a tuning wheel appears next to it. You can use this feature to more efficiently manage your research markers, drafts, and completed notes in the app.
