Airplane Mode is a useful feature, but it can also cause headaches of its own if turned on accidentally. This phone feature disconnects you from your mobile phone service, meaning you cannot receive your SMS messages, phone calls or mobile data. You will also be disconnected from Wi-Fi and GPS.
If you have relatives or children who constantly turn on Airplane mode, causing you to miss important calls and messages, or making loved ones a little more inaccessible, then there are a few solutions to help you out.
Set an Automation for Airplane Mode
Stage 1: Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. If you uninstalled it, you can download it again.
Step 2: Open the “Shortcuts” App and click the “Automation” button in the bottom middle of the screen.
Stage 3: Click ‘Create Personal Automation’ and go to Airplane Mode.
Step 4: Select ‘On’. This will turn on your Automation when Airplane Mode is enabled.
Step 5: Click Add Action to open the search window. There are many combinations and programs you can run from here and we will write for that purpose. Aeroplane in the Search Bar.
Step 6: Click Set Airplane Mode to see this screen.
Step 7: You will be taken back to the Actions tab, the “script” of your automation. Click on the word “On” to change it to “Off”.
It should read “Turn Off Airplane Mode”.
Step 8: Click ‘Next’ to save your new Automation. We move to a new screen where all the steps taken are explained. The program of our automation:
“When Airplane Mode Is On….. Set Airplane Mode [Off]”
Toggle ‘Ask Before Running’ to Off. Your screen should look like this before you move on to the next step.
Step 9: Click Next in the top right corner and we’re done creating our new Automation. Let’s test it to make sure it works correctly. Exit shortcuts and turn on Airplane Mode.
If your program is working correctly when you turn on Airplane Mode, you will receive a notification that your automation is working (see photo below) and Airplane Mode will be turned off.
You will know Airplane Mode is turned off when the airplane icon disappears from your taskbar. In the image below, the top screenshot shows Airplane Mode on. The image below is when Airplane Mode is turned off.
Troubleshooting Airplane Mode Automation
The Plane Icon Is Still There
If you find that the airplane icon is still present after you turn on your Airplane Mode, your Automation did not work properly. When you turn on Airplane Mode, you will see a Shortcuts notification and if you do, your automation is active but not working.
Shortcuts ask for your permission to run the automation, which will prevent the automation from running until you give it permission.
Stage 1: This means you have to open your Shortcuts app, click on the Automation tab and find Airplane Mode Automation.
Step 2: Make sure Ask Before Running is OFF.
If this feature is turned on, you will need to confirm the automation each time you turn on Airplane Mode. This is a great protection to prevent your phone from running any unwanted Automation, but this prevents us from turning Airplane Mode off automatically.
How to Turn Off Automation
If you’re traveling or want to put your phone in airplane mode to save battery, this Automation will prevent you from turning on Airplane Mode for more than a second.
Stage 1: Open the Shortcuts App, click the Automation tab and find your Airplane Mode Automation. Turn on your Airplane Mode Automation.
Step 2: At the top of the automation, next to Enable This Automation, there is a button to turn it off. Click the button to turn off automation. You can turn it back on whenever you want.
How to Delete Airplane Mode Automation from iOS?
Stage 1: Open the Shortcuts App, click the Automation tab and find your Airplane Mode Automation.
Step 2: Swipe left in your automation to reveal the delete feature and click on it.
