How to summon a horse in Elden Ring

If you’re not sure how to summon a horse in Elden Ring, don’t worry. You can’t get to a certain point, so if you don’t know how, you haven’t gotten there yet. You can unlock the Elden Ring horse, Torrent the Spectral Steed, early in the game, but it may take longer than necessary if you explore. Even if you choose the most direct route, you’ll need to do some swordplay and exploration first. It’s important to get the horse fast though, as access allows you to quickly and easily cross the Lands Between Elden Ring, crossing terrain, leaping off steep terrain, and giving you an edge in some fights. Here’s how to get all the perks and abilities of mounted combat, along with the Elden Ring horse, to get you moving faster.

How to summon a horse in Elden Ring

Players can unlock Torrent the Spectral Steed by visiting Sites of Grace, the Shining, golden, bonfire-like checkpoints in the explorable world of the Elden Ring. Most players seem to unlock the horse once they reach the Gatefront Ruins Site Grace, so we recommend watching the light trailer to get it as soon as possible when you get out to the world.

There was some confusion because you have to find a character named Melina to get the horse. Now, the official explanation on how to do this is straight from FromSoftware:

“Note that Melina will appear at several predetermined Places of Blessing. [the Gatefront Ruins]so if you explore other areas before visiting the Gatefront, you may encounter it elsewhere.”

But everyone seems to be running into him on Gatefront right now, so that’s our advice for now.

When you meet him, he will give you an item called Spectral Steed Whistle, which you can trigger at any time to summon the horse in the Elden Ring. They are listed in your Key Items and can be equipped as Quick Items in the Equipment menu, just like your bottles. You can also place them in your extra storage bags to keep them separate from your Quick Items. With the whistle on, press X/Sqaure to use it and Torrent (or summon) the horse just below you. You can also quickly bypass and invoke Torrent by clicking LS/L3.

How to drive and use torrent the Spectral Steed

The horse in Elden Ring functions to increase the maneuverability of the player, while somewhat limiting the range of movements that can be made. Torrent normally moves fast, but can gallop by pressing B/Circle. The horse can also double jump, which allows it to clear large gaps and obstacles, and you can still use other items like Bottles in your equipment slots if you need them while riding.

However, Torrent has no limitations. Being a large, fast-moving horse means Torrent is more clumsy and less precise in its movements; Therefore, you will find yourself driving in large circles where you have to make charge rounds to attack your enemies. Players also cannot use Weapon Skills, blocking, or other behaviors while mounted, but they can still attack and engage in combat. LB/L1 and LT/L2 become light and heavy attacks on the player’s left side respectively, while RB/R1 and RT/R2 become light and heavy attacks only on the player’s right side.

Torrent is also not immortal and can be killed by both enemy attacks and excessive fall damage. If killed, the Torrent will disappear, but can be instantly summoned again using the normal whistle. You can also improve the torrent by giving it a set of raisin food items.
