The OnePlus 8T brings home a host of new features. Whether it’s a stunning screen, a great camera or good battery life – it’s a pretty attractive smartphone. Add to that the new and polished OxygenOS 11 features and you have an almost perfect everyday driver.
We’re excited to share OnePlus 8T tips and tricks with you so you can get the most out of it, too.

1. Bring Back Shutdown Menu
Ok, let’s get one thing clear – the Power menu on the OnePlus 8T is weird. When I first tried to turn off the OnePlus 8T, Google Assistant popped up to ask how I was doing. Yes, turning off the OnePlus 8T is no easy task. Fortunately, there is another way to do this.
Press the Power button and the Volume up button simultaneously to turn off your OnePlus 8T and the Power menu will pop up immediately. And for an interface that emphasizes one-handed use, that makes absolutely no difference.
However, if you wish, you can eliminate this hassle and bring back the traditional menu.
To do this, go to Settings > Buttons & Gestures and select the “Hold…” option. Next, select ‘Power menu’ from the list and that’s it. Yes, you can thank me later.
2. Customize the Always-On Ambient Display
The Always On Display is the Always On Ambient Display, perhaps one of the most anticipated features in OxygenOS. Like its Samsung counterpart, you can see some information on the screen without waking the phone.
To enable it, go to Settings > Display > Ambient Display and then set it to All day.
What’s more, you can customize it further. To do this, go back to Settings and select Customization. Next, tap Clock Style and you’ll see a brand new collection of clocks. Is not it beautiful?
Interestingly, all of this combines a feature called Insight Clock that tells you how long you have unlocked your phone. Every time you unlock the phone, it leaves some space on the centerline. And the width of the gap will tell you how long you’ve been using your phone.
Cool Tip: You can also change the horizon light colors from the menu. To do this, scroll down in Ambient Display Settings and click on Horizon Light.
3. Share Smart
Another new feature that you will find useful is the newly opened Quick Share feature. Quick Share is the Android equivalent of Apple’s AirPlay and that’s great!
Whether it’s your photos or screenshots, you can now share these images quickly and quickly. For example, you took a screenshot. All you have to do is tap the Share button and you will see the option immediately.
If this is your first time doing this, you will see Device Visibility options along with Device name. Select Open from the menu.
Now, if the recipient has Nearby Sharing enabled, it will appear directly in the menu. All you have to do is click Accept and the transfer will be completed in seconds.
4. Say Hello to the New SMS App
Did you know that the new Messages app on your OnePlus 8T has overhauled its UI? Yes, you no longer need to search for a long lost message.
Like Truecaller and SMS Organizer (see the best Microsoft SMS Organizer tips and tricks), now the Messages app shows important information right away. There are visual cards on the top to distinguish Transaction messages and Promotion messages from others.
However, if you don’t like the Visual cards, you can disable them from Settings. To do this, tap on the three-dot menu at the top and select Settings. Then change the key for Visual cards and you’re good to go.
5. Customize Dark Mode Timing
Dark Mode is another great feature on your new OnePlus phone. If you’re someone like me who doesn’t like Dark Mode during the day, you can set a schedule for it. This way, you can switch to dark theme according to a suitable time.
To do this, go to Display Settings and tap on Dark Mode to see all the options. You can choose the sunrise timing or enter a custom timing to your liking.
Interestingly, you can also force dark mode on apps that don’t already support it. For those unaware, this feature was originally available in the OnePlus Labs menu.
6. Enable Focus Tracking
It was high time that the OnePlus camera had focus tracking. If you must know, Samsung came up with a similar feature with the Samsung Galaxy S8. With active focus tracking, you can continuously focus on a moving object, such as a pet. Quite naturally, it allows you to get rid of blurry and unfocused images. As they say, a moment never comes back.
The Focus Tracking mode on the OnePlus 8T is similar. When enabled, it also allows you to keep the focus on the selected subject.
To enable it, open the Camera app and tap Settings. Select Focus Tracking from the list and that’s it.
7. Zen Zone
OnePlus 8T also brings five new themes to its Zen Mode Mod. Yes, cutting your phone time is more important than ever, and OnePlus entices you to check out some comforting visuals to keep you from going crazy on social media or YouTube.
To check them out, pull down the Quick Settings menu and select Zen Mode from the menu.
Swipe left to switch between different themes. Click on Let’s Go after choosing the one you like.
Hey, turn off your phone already!
Cool Tip: You can select the duration up to 120 minutes. Now, that’s going to be a real challenge in itself, right?
8. Enable Quick Start
If you’re someone who likes shortcuts, your OnePlus 8T will let you do something great. With your new phone, you can access your favorite apps directly from the fingerprint scanner.
All you have to do is press and hold the fingerprint scanner for a little longer. When the phone is unlocked, the shortcut menu will be displayed immediately.
To enable this feature, go to Settings > Utilities > Quick Launch and toggle the switch. The best part is that you can use the apps of your choice. To do this, select Quick Launch Settings from the menu.
Game Open!
