Apple recently released the iOS 15 operating system. And while most iPhone users will likely want to install the new operating system, others may want to stick with iOS 14.
iOS 15 is out of beta and can be downloaded if you have a compatible iPhone. The new operating system brings numerous changes to the iPhone, including upgraded Maps, Weather, Messages, Photos and more.
It’s a tempting upgrade, but there are some legitimate reasons to delay the move to iOS 15. For one, you can get stuck on iOS 14 and still get updates from Apple.
Apple allows iPhone users to stick with the previous version of iOS and still receive important security patches. Previously, these security updates were only available through upgrading to the latest version of iOS.
If you’re currently using iOS 14, go to the Software Update section in the General section of the Settings app. You will notice that iOS 15 is now showing as an alternative update, which means you don’t have to install it if you don’t want to.

How to Keep Your iPhone on iOS 14
If you’ve decided that you want to skip iOS 15 in the short-term or long-term, here’s what to do.
When these options are turned off, your iPhone will remain on iOS 14. When Apple releases a new version of iOS 14 and at some point along the way you will see this update in the Software Update section of your Settings.
Before committing to keeping your iPhone on iOS 14, remember that you will not receive any new features from Apple. These will be reserved for future iOS 15 upgrades.
While we can see that the new iOS 14 firmware brings critical bug fixes to iPhone models that remain in the operating system, we expect future iOS 14 updates to focus on security.
It’s also worth noting that Apple may not pave the way back to iOS 14 from iOS 15. The iOS 14 downgrade path is currently closed and it is unclear whether it will be turned back on.
Keep this in mind before you migrate your iPhone to iOS 15. You may not be able to go back to iOS 14 when you take action.
